Is anyone taking Nuzyra for M. Abscesses or other?

Nuzyra is a new antibiotic used to treat M. Abscesses. It should be taken after 4 hours of fasting and prior to 2 more hours of fasting. I decided to take at 10 PM, but now I can't sleep. Insomnia is a side effect. I'm taking Linezolid at 6 AM and 6 PM, and Arikayce at 11 AM. Since I want to space out my drugs, now thinking on changing my time. Anyone else having or had this issue? Did the insomnia subside? I'm thinking set alarm for maybe 3 AM and take then? I'm doing good with Linezolid taking with toast in the morning and dinner at night. Though Linezolid is complicated too, since diet should be low or void of Tyramines to help avoid side effects.

Hi Kathyjjb,
Have you experienced any nausea with your dose of Nuzyra? Do you take 2 tablets nightly? I need to take a half or 1/4 of Zofran 30 minutes prior to taking 2 pills or I have vomiting. I now need to take a yeast pill once a week for 6 months to prevent more yeast infections. On the day I take the yeast medication, I can’t take Zofran. I am open to any suggestions to help on this one night to prevent vomiting since I can’t take Zofran that evening.
Positive wishes to All.

@janetannfaust Hi Janet, I'm no longer taking Nuzyra. My insurance would not cover, and fortunately I was taken off all my MABC antibiotics due to low count and negative tests, Basically Dr is watching and waiting. Nuzyra made me so sick. I'm so sorry, you're having this problem. I only took for 3 weeks (my local ID doctor gave me free samples), went to NJH 3rd week into treatment when they determined I could go of medications-at least for now. My NJH DR would have put me on Clonazepam (I think that's the one) in lieu of the Nuzyra.

Yes, I take the drug and I changed my time to seven in the morning and then I just don’t eat anything till after 11 and that seems to work the best for not interfering with my dinner time and not interfering with my sleep

I take mine at 6:30 AM along with clofazamine, and azithromycin and eat at 8:30 AM. No problems.

I took Nuzyra several years ago ago for Abscessus, and even tho I set an alarm for 4 am to take it I usually woke up for my normal once-a-night pee before 4 am. So I would just take the pill then and turn off the alarm.
That schedule worked great for me because it seemed to be the least disruptive to my life.

My spouse had a terrible time getting started with Nuzyra. He tried different times of day and taking it with a couple of crackers. The doctors ( (ID and Pulmonologist; University of Penn in Philly) added Ondansetron (Zofran/8mg) and he takes that at 5:30 am and he takes the two Nuzyra pills no earlier than 6:00 am and no later than 6:15 am. That works well (even though it’s a pain to wake him up every morning!). If he takes them too close together it doesn’t give the Ondansetron enough time to dissolve in the tummy. If he takes them too far apart, the Nuzyra causes him a lot of tummy upset (nausea, vomiting, and cramps). He also takes an oral antibiotic with food twice a day and inhaled Amikacin once daily. The NTM Abscesses has been fully cleared from his lungs since May, but he’ll stay on this regimen through the first quarter of 2026 to make sure the bacteria is fully cleared.

He also did 4 months of IV antibiotics (with 2 drugs) along with 2 additional oral antibiotics earlier this year and continued those until two cultures showed no bacterial infection. Once the second consecutive culture was clear, he had a lung bronchoscope biopsy and lung culture for both bacteria and cancer. He has shown no signs or symptoms of NTM-A for 7 months.

To those of you struggling with these really strong antibiotics and tests, you.can.do this!

I take thyroid med at 6am every morning so morning won’t work for me. I am still taking at 11-11:30pm. I vomit usually the day I take my yeast pill bc can’t take half of Zofran that day.
My issue this week is numb/tingling in my toes so waiting to hear from ID. Probably the Linezolid side effect of neuropathy. Did you ever take it? I also use the inhaled Arikayce.
Do you take all meds at the same time? Are you ever nauseous? I spread mine out thru the afternoon and evening.
Best to all!

@janetannfaust Hi Janet, my doctor told me that it is OK to take the antibiotics with my thyroid meds. He also double checked it with the pharmacist. So I take my thyroid meds, the omadacycline, and the clofazimine at the same time (6:30am). Then I take the Azithromycin along with the Nystatin about an hour later… just in case everything at once will be too much for my stomach. Then I eat at 8:30AM.

I haven’t had the numbness and tingling, but I’ve never been on Linezolid or Arikace (although I think this is going to be added) I get nauseous once in a while, but it is pretty short-lived. Also a little crampy at times.

@cyndanna Hi, Thanks for sharing your routine. I’m worried if I take my thyroid med with Nuzyra then get sick that my thyroid med will be thrown up too. I usually never get sick from meds but that Nuzyra can make it happen to me.
I just bumped up my neb to 7% sodium chloride, hope I can produce a sputum sample soon.
Take care!

I'm curious if anyone with M.Abscessus and has Medicare Advantage plan been approved for Nuzyra? Though, I am now testing negative for MABC, my ID doctor told me recurrence/reinfection is 50%. My current Medicare Advantage plan denied coverage last May for Abscessus. Also, my insurance broker told me that Bronchiectasis is an exclusion for Medigap, so at this time and unless things change, I'm stuck with Medicare Advantage. I have since learned that Nuzyra is not considered a standard treatment for MABC. which gives the insurance company a loophole in denying coverage. I'm trying to stay vigilant to avoid reinfection.
