Brain MRI and small vessel brain disease

Posted by sarah371 @sarah371, Jan 19, 2024

Hello,

My recent brain MRI indicates 'moderate likely small vessel ischemic changes and moderate hyperintense T2/Flair signal of the corona radiata bilaterally'.

Do these findings possibly indicate small vessel brain disease that may be similar to my previously diagnosed coronary microvascular disease?

Thank you.

@leemoore13 You want to avoid saturated fats from animal sources, like dairy and meat. But saturated fat from vegetable sources is good for you, like olive oil, avocados, and peanut butter. (Except palm oil & coconut are bad)
Also, try to cut down on white flour & rice ( use whole grain instead) and sugar.

What evidence is there that your suggestions can have any beneficial impacts on CSVD?

@keithl56 I’m not sure what CSVD stands for. I just know when I learned I had partially clogged arteries, the cardiologist told me to avoid saturated fat and stress. I had already been a vegetarian, but I decided to cut out dairy. Six months later, all my bad numbers had gotten MUCH better. And during that time, I learned about the good vegetable saturated fats, and I continued to eat avocados, etc. This was in 2018. I’m still here, and my numbers in my blood tests are still good. Unfortunately, I now also have other issues, leaky valves and small vessel disease.

CSVD usually refers to chronic microvascular disease (or white matter disease). That is what the original poster was asking about. There is no way to reverse it, hence my curiosity re your post about possible actions to have a positive impact on those of us who suffer from it.

@keithl56 Okay, sorry. Small vessel disease is also called microvascular disease.

Both conditions arise from the same mechanism - plaque build up. At least the coronary issues have the potential to be addressed via stent or bypass, but as my neurologist said "we can't roto root your brain". Good luck!

I thought that CSVD (cerebral small vessel disease) was irreversible. Is there any treatments that you’re aware of?

@susanejw

It is cerebral small vessel disease (of the brain) and there is no cure. It doesn’t always develop into dementia, stroke or heart attack though.

No, as my neurologist told me "I can't rotoroot your brain!". It is not something that you would expect some magic pill or diet to help. Just have to live with it and hope for the best.
