What happens when you stop taking anastrozole?

Posted by kamra @kamra, May 7, 2023

I've been taking anastrozole for six months to shrink tumors in preparation for surgery. I stopped taking it about a week and a half ago as the doctor ordered since my surgery is coming up. I've felt weird and not very well since stopping. I've been tired, kind of dizzy, and just not feeling myself. Anyone have experience with side effects when stopping Anastrozole? Thank you. I go back on it after surgery.

I tried exemestane but it had side effects and I’m taking a month off and I’ll try Tamoxifen.

I have only been taking Anastrozole for 3 weeks. I have already started to have side effects like urinary incontinence which I had finally gotten under control before starting this. I also have very bad pain and stiffness at the base of my head and upper body where they meet each other. Had to take a muscle relaxer last night trying to free up the area. Not really helping so rubbing Aspercreme on and taking Advil. Has anyone else had this experience. Thinking I will stop this drug before things get worse. I'm more of a person who does natural remedies so looking to go that route even though my breast cancer with 100% Estrogen positive.

@1aug2allis

I was on it for 5 months and had to stop for similar reasons. My fingers were so stiff they won’t bend unless I forced them. The tendons in my upper arms were just as stiff. Quality of life is so important to me. My oncologist then put me on exemestane which was even worse. I’ve decided to enjoy each day to the fullest without the drugs.

@biddle1267 I'm glad I'm not the only one realizing that these drugs don't make daily life pleasant at all. I'm glad I only took for 3 weeks, but I'm wondering how long till my back stop hurting and neck. Hopefully not to long. So sorry to hear about your fingers getting that stiff and upper arms. I'm sure you weren't comfortable at all. I agree with you enjoy each day, feel your best and leave the rest to a higher power.

Anyone know how soon will my breast cancer come back? I stopped taking anastrozole after a few months because the side effects were so bad.

@ebtexas55 read the article that you posted link to. I get confused/ is DIM safe to take of you’ve had BC? It works ‘like’ the AIs , Anastrozole without side effect or lessened side effects? I took Anastrozole for about 2 yrs and quit. I could hardly walk my hip was so bad. I’m very careful no to take or eat things that ‘may’ increase my estrogen. TIA

@sequoia
I havent taken DIM.
Like you, I have to be careful because Im on Afib meds.
However, if youre not progesterone positive read about yam cream and progesterone cream.

FYI: look at Dr Oracle. Its an online paid subscription. Its AI generated and meant for the medial community but people interested and doing research can subscribe.

I only took it for 3 weeks and I am also feeling lightheaded and not quite myself. I'm hoping with time I will no longer have that feeling. I've decided not to take it even though the Oncologist would frown upon my decision. As I'm reading others side effects glad I'm realizing before I get to far into taking it for a lengthy time might do more damage than good to the body. Each if us will have to decide what we think is best for our quality of life. I don't let doctors push me into things I don't want to do. Its really up to you as the patient what you can deal with.
