Afraid it the treatment meds for osteoporosis

Posted by mahonlye @mahonlye, 5 days ago

I’m 68 with latest spine score of-37. My body type is very thin with BMI 19- but I eat extremely healthy diet and do excellent exercise every day - no falls. I have no other health issues so dont need to take medications. I’m totally petrified to take any of the medications I’ve been told I need for treatment of osteoporosis. I don’t know what to do! I know breaking bones will be awful but I’m so weary of these poisons they want to put in my body.

Unfortunately, I had to consider and take osteoporosis meds. At 63, I experienced 3 compression fractures in 2 months that were misdiagnosed as neuropathy for 6 months. My spine was -3.7. Reluctantly, after much research, I took Evenity for a year. Currently, I took my second infusion of Reclast with very few side effects from either drug. My spine improved to -2.9 after a year on Evenity. Next year the bone scan should reveal how well the Reclast has worked. I’m not sure what my next steps will be. I too worry about all the potential side effects, but I also worry about ending up in a wheelchair or with more fractures. My mother had osteoporosis and fractured a hip and wrist. I was a former distance runner and have exercised throughout my life, recovered from stress fractures, etc., yet here I am. I have consulted with one orthopedic doctor and one endocrinologist who both believe that I will need bone meds for life. However, I remain hopeful that I may be able to leave these meds behind. ☘️

I too have similar dexascan scores and won’t take the osteoporosis drugs. I am 75 weighing just 48kg . BMI of 17.3. I am eating a sensible diet but can’t do much dairy . I started fortibone six months ago and calcium with D3 and K2. Walk every day but can’t weight train due to lumbar spine problem and am waiting for an operation. No fractures at all. My bones might not be dense due to the fact that they are small!! My rheumatologist agrees with that. I had a fall during a house move down some indoor stairs onto a hard floor five years ago and no bones broken at all!! I pray each day that I am doing the right thing as I am very sensitive to medication of any kind.

Very similar. Thank you! I’m going to look into Fortibone also. From what I see so far, this could be a very helpful supplement.

Clearly, we hope science comes up with better meds for Osteoporosis, ones without such awful side-effects…people who have been through cancer therapy are especially wary of ‘’bone chemo’’…..

I’m with you on not wanting to put these poisons in my system either. I’m 76 with a T score of my spine that is -3.7. I’ve had one compression fracture. My T score dropped 12% in 2 years which I find hard to fathom. I had to have a hysterectomy due to uterine cancer but didn’t require any chemo or radiation.
I’m almost thinking I will pay myself to have another one done. My Endocrinologist has suggested Evenity or Prolia.
The side effects bother me too.

Wow, it is so hard to know what to trust, what’s the right thing to do. Good luck, and best to you with all.
