Sunscreen
Hi Transplant Family!
I am having a problem finding sunscreen that I like. Do you have a favorite sunscreen for your face, scalp and a different one for your body? Have you tried one of the new scalp sunscreen sprays? Does your face sunscreen leave a white cast to your face or have you tried some of the new tinted versions? Do you
use the mineral only version?
I didn't know that sunscreen was going to be so complicated. Please let know the brands and types that are working well for you. With all my MOHS surgeries, I want to be diligent with my sunscreen.
Thanks everyone!! ☺️

I use drmtlgy tinted moisturizer or elta md tinted moisturizer every day as face moisturizer and sun protection. Both good quality dermatology recommend. They are spf 46 and give protection daily when out and about. Sometimes if i want more makeup coverage, I'll mix in some foundation but the tinted daily gives decent basic coverage for running errands etc. If I plan to be outside in sun all day like yard work, beach etc, I will put on a pure sunscreen. I like the nuetrogena face sunscreen. Non oily and high spf. They also have non oily powdery spray for body that I like.
@mkhogan I also use drmtlgy tinted moisturizer, and find it fills my requirements. I have had several MOHS surgeries.

Hi @mkhogan and @gingerw 😀
I hope all is well. Thanks so much for your sunscreen info. I never heard of either "drmtlgy" or "elta md". I will definitely check them out! I assume you can buy both brands on-line since I have never seen them at CVS.
I will also check out Neutrogena.
Thanks again!!
Yes. I get both through Amazon if you use that. I believe target has elta md
I do like the tinted sunscreen because I can easily apply to my face everyday. My doctors also recommended something with Zinc in it. More protection but a thicker sunscreen.
@rachel5239 @mkhogan @gingerw
Thank you so much for the detailed information. And Rachel, thank you for telling me to check the ingredients for zinc!
When I was a little girl playing on the Jersey shore, all the lifeguards had a line of white zinc oxide on their nose. Happy memories! It makes sense that it's still the best physical protection against sunburn so I will definitely look for it. 👍
I use Elta MD 50, face and body sunscreen. Recommended by my transplant dermatologist.
I swim everyday and I use Blue Lizard all good ingredients no petroleum which most have, I just use it on my face and doesn’t a scent
Hi @jtjourney 😊 You mentioned that you have a "transplant dermatologist". I saw that medical specialty listed on the internet, but I have been unable to find one in my area. In addition, I don't think my transplant center has that narrow speciality. How did you find your dermatologist that specializes in transplant? Have you had MOHS surgery, using EFUDEX, blue light, or any specialized scanning or treatments? Was your immune suppression meds changed to include Sirolimus? I am so excited that you were able to find a transplant dermatologist!!
Like some of you, I'm of the age where we, as children/young adults, did not use sunscreen. And now we are taking powerful meds which wonderfully protect our beautiful transplanted organs - and which burden us with some undesirable sun effects.
With the skin condition, Vitiligo, I learned mid teens to avoid too much sun and not to get a sunburn. As I aged, I added sunscreen to my daily routine. And now, as a transplant recipient, I have added sun protective clothing - and a wide brimmed hat if I'm going to be out doors. I really try to remain vigilant of the need for sun protection all year round.
Here is a discussion where some of our alumni members have shared their sun safety tips! and the knowledge exchange shared in the discussion helped to create this article written for the Mayo Clinic app.

I like all of the suggestions that all of you are sharing! We learn so much from each other. As my granddaughter often says, "You are the best! "
