Reversal of a fundoplication

Posted by Pawsboy9 @pawsboy9, Aug 5, 2012

I had a hernia and the fundoplication done in February as post this my chest is on fire. Going back to see the surgeon who did it on Tuesday. Has anybody had the same experience? If this guy does not have a answer heading for Mayo.

Thanks
Dennis

Gee, I wish I could have mine reversed! Had in 2000 and it has always been too tight! Can't burp, throwup, get night time bloat every night since 2000! Sleep about 3 hours and then have to get up and move. Day time the gas moves down, nighttime NO!
Hopefully, your redo is great for you!

@nirolk
It’s been almost two weeks since my revision surgery. I must admit my midsection has not felt this normal/relaxed in three and a half years.

Still on a liquid diet for two more days. Then a week on a mushy diet.

Big noticeable difference is I’m not experiencing the extreme excessive gas as before.

I’m extremely grateful to Dr Odell and the Michigan Medicine team. I won’t say at this point it’s a %100 improvement but it’s damn close.

I had the Nissan fundiplication about a year and a half ago. I felt amazing for nine-months. Then, one day my stomach was burning, aching, you name it. I went back to the mayo clinic and got scoped to check the wrap. Well, the GI said the wrap was good and that he also checked me for SIBO. Sure enough, I have it. Along with two ulcers. I was also wondering about a reversal of the surgery. I still have GURDS, and recently found out from a GI in Texas that two-thirds of people who have had this surgery still require acid blockers. So I think I wasted a lot of money, but am not sure if the surgery caused the SIBO. if it did, I will definitely have it reversed. I am worse than I was pre-procedure. So maybe see if you have developed SIBO as well. Good Luck in your quest.

I've had 2 fundoplications- first was a Nissen wrap ww/ GB removal (DON'T RECOMMEND) for severe reflux- lost my voice for 5 months. The bloating was horrendous. Able to burp, but with difficulty. Esophageal spasm so painful I thought I was having a heart attack ( writhing on the floor, 12/10 pain. ) Still have spasms but I'm able to manage them, I have a Lidocaine suspension on hand if needed. Still have difficulty swallowing especially with dry foods, like chicken & bread. EGD's done 4x for some stretching, but I think that scar is so tight it doesn't help much. Symptoms have been worse since I had a VP shunt implanted in August, now with pain over the rib where the shunt empties into my abdomen. I have to sip on hot liquids while eating for food to go down.
Not sure where to go from here.

@luvnursing52 I'll keep you in my prayers for relief and answers. I had a NF in March this year for hiatal hernia and reflux, and still experiencing reflux. GI doc talked about reversing the NF. I'm confused about that but I'm trusting my heavenly Father to guide me. I'm praying he will do the same for you. God bless~

Hey Dennis. I know your pain buddy. I haven't researched the reversal yet. I'm going to get scoped this Tuesday ( north and south pole) because this GI thinks I've got more than one thing going on. I literally have made my peace with God three times. Even though I did have a hernia, this doc says there's a reason for so much acid. That reason he explained, is my body trying to control the bad bacteria in my small intestine. Well, over time somethings gotta give, and I developed GERDS. I've missed some work, but it's getting worse. And I too am worried. My stomach, chest, or guts hurt all the time now. I'm being checked for Celiac disease, Crohns, diverticultis, IBS, and some others. Once I get these results I will see what this GI recommends. I will also talk to him about benefits of a reversal. I did have mine done at Mayo in Phoenix. Awesome female surgeon. I won't ever go for surgery anyplace else. The only two things that give me some relief are, nexium, and keeping something in my stomach. I have been to a holistic doc. Spent about $600.00 on supplements. Got some relief. Short-lived though. My advice Dennis, for what it's worth is to see if you've got something secondary that's causing your symptoms. In the meantime, I will be researching the pros and cons of a reversal and let u know what I find out ok. Hang in there buddy. I know it's miserable. But you're not alone. I'm on the Internet every night talking with people about this. There's an overload if opinions though. It's hard to sort through it all, but I'm pretty damn perserverant, and tired of feeling like this. Try nexium for now is all I've right now. You may have also developed ulcers post surgery like I did. Take care.

Thank you for putting so much time into your comments. I appreciate how much you’ve researched and shared.

I too have had all sorts of GI issues, had a Toupet fundoplication and not much relief, maybe even worse.

I think also what you are saying is true, a lot of the symptoms are probably coming from other imbalances in the body, like SIBI/dysbiosis, maybe even dysautonomia….

This is why I am doing a really strict protocol for healing - I only eat soft, slow cooked meats, especially beef. I also add animal fats and meat stock.
Very strict sleeping schedule, limiting stimulation, sunlight, grounding, activity and avoiding anything toxic…..
So as to reset my nervous system and microbiome.

How are you nowadays? Did you end up having the reversal for the fundoplication? Did you manage to find your way?

Curious of your reply!

@linsui had hiatal hernia surgery that failed 2 month afterwards. I had my second one a month ago. I have no reflux. Acid reflux is awful. I hope this surgery sticks
