Chronic salty taste

Posted by bel59 @bel59, May 31, 2024

Hello
Has or is anyone experiencing intense & chronic salty taste in the mouth? If so have you gained any relief or insight from any type of practitioner. I am a long term sufferer and it is a very mentally debilitating condition.
Thx Bel

@legieliga00 Hi … sad to hear of your experience. My salty taste experience is now in its 7th year and is ever gradually worsening. This is not to say that your condition won’t resolve itself anytime soon (maybe even tomorrow .. who knows). I have tried every possible doctor/specialist/naturopath/ acupuncturist etc I can think of to no avail and they collectively have no idea what has caused it and therefore cannot specifically target a treatment. It has been life changing, frustrating and depressing. Hopefully your experience is not like mine. Best wishes.

@bel59 This is terrible. I don't know what to do with it. Is it associated with back pain for you? I have back pain, burning in my legs. The salty feeling in my mouth is terrible. No doctor knows about it. It's funny to me that nowadays (I'm not the only one... they don't have a solution)

@legieliga00 I don’t have any other health issues. Many years ago I did have spinal fusion at the C5-C6 level but the salty taste didn’t occur until years after that.
The fact that no practitioner (of any kind) has any idea is incredibly frustrating. My fear is it’s a n auto-immune problem and therefore very likely incurable.

@bel59 And do you have it all night? It disappears at night... also no one knows what causes it. It only occurs during activity. It doesn't happen at rest. It's the same for me. No one knows what it's from.

It's only at night that I get respite - because I'm asleep. Otherwise it is there during all awake hours regardless of activity.

@bel59 I'll have to try the icy water to see if that helps me too. My husband recommended trying the acupuncture since he is so frustrated too with how I am feeling but I am not surprised to hear that it didn't help. Let me know if you decide to do the hypnotherapy and if it helps. Have you been to an oral surgeon? By the end of the day the tip of my tongue is red and irritated and that is making things worse. I think it's from all the miserable tastes that I have all day and I was thinking that maybe there is a rinse that would at least help that. Best wishes again to you too.

@neisie13 Hey everyone, hope you’re doing well with all the adversities. Thanks for the icy water suggestion. Nothing takes away the salty taste but it’s soothing. I found a mouthwash, Biotene, which helps for sometime. It’s basically for dry mouth but helps with salty taste. Wish you all good luck 👍

Thanks for your post. My taste goes from sour/bitter to salty for no reason at all. I never know when I wake up which taste is going to be worse for that day. As others have mentioned, the only time I get relief is when sleeping and sometimes I even have an hour first thing in the morning when things are almost normal. Then it starts up. Biotene sometimes helps but only for a short time. I too am beginning to wonder if I will ever get an answer. Yes, good luck to everyone.

Is it an actual production of a salty taste or just a feeling of saltiness? Do partners notice the saltiness? I only feel the saltiness myself — no one else can taste it, right? Does anyone have any other problems too? For example, with the back? Burning feet, etc.?

@legieliga00 oh yeah I have terrible burning feet.

I think it’s theorized the taste disorder could be nerve damage.

@celia16 Personally, I think the same.... But I don't know what to do about it. I take supplements, I go to rehab, it's better, but I still can't get rid of it.

@munira12 It's nerve damage. I have the same thing... as @celia16 mentioned. It burns me too, from the inside of my thighs, into my calves and tingles in my toes.
