3am Anxiety after AFib diagnosis

Posted by frankie555 @frankie555, Sep 28 11:58am

So I’m 2 weeks in with my AFib diagnosis (61F). Since my first visit to the ER I have been waking up at 3 am very anxious. It’s in the form of trembling. I cannot get back to sleep. I end up taking a .5mg Lorazapam which helps somewhat but my sleep is completely ruined. I try and fight through it but never seem to be able to get back to a restful sleep. How do I stop this and will it ever end? I’m so tired. I have yet to see a cardiologist as my referral is being processed.

@4aces4me Did your cardiologist tell you why you should not take magnesium?

@k09 If a person's kidneys are working properly, a person will excrete all the excess elements he/she doesn't need in the urine. Diseased/disordered kidneys will have problems. Before taking large amounts of elemental supplements, one should have a blood assay to determine kidney function. Then, there's also dietary problems: people often don't get enough magnesium in their diets due to the quality of the soils in which their produce, if they eat any regularly, is grown. So, I can see why one physician might caution against willy-nilly, seat-of-the-pants, guesstimated supplementation. Others might say go ahead...can't hurt. That would be incautious to me.

Cardiologist did not say why. My kidney numbers aren’t terrible but aspects on the low end of normal so could be the reason he suggested I stay away from mag supplements.

I am not sure why that would be, but I guess I would ask him why!

Pray. Ask God to remove your anxiety and fears which can cause health issues. Fear is a spiritual and mind issue.
Get up and drink some water. Ask God to help you sleep. When I do, I immediately start yawning.

Your angst and worry is quite understandable; I was diagnosed in 2023 and still sometimes go to bed worrying about will I have afib tonight... it's hard to keep my mind from spiraling into "what ifs", once you get an appointment with an electrophysiologist heart doctor, write down your list of fears and questions to take to your appointment. Over time, as you learn about afib, hopefully, your 3AM anxiety attacks will lessen; are you taking an anticoagulant like eliquis? You're not alone in having the 3AM "monster under the bed" episodes ; I try to pray and think about some things good in my life to get back to sleep. Easy to say, hard to do... maybe you can get a KardiaMobile Card to use to document your events to discuss with your doctor too.
You're not alone,,,, have Faith, not Fear

@pearl72 Yes, the first post in this format/platform does not take the form of a 'reply' where the person being replied to seems to be notified...at least, that's my impression. Maybe one of the mods will comment about the first responder to a new thread's first post gets notified without the 'frankie' prefix in blue showing up. However, you did reply to the thread, so I think the OP (original poster) should learn of your reply.

@pearl72 thanks so much for your reply. I’m not seeing a cardiologist until early November. Just on Metropolol 2x day at the moment. No anti coagulants as my Chadvas score was a 1. I have soooo many questions. I’m doing all that I can at the moment. Trying to get more sleep, drinking lots of water and eating right. Hope to have a plan after my cardiologist visit. I hope that will help settle my anxiety.

Was put on Eliquis 2.5 mg twice a day and Metoprolol Tartrate 25 mg 11 half twice a day for Afib about three weeks ago. Just feel so bad no energy and very tired all the time. Can’t get anything done. Anyone else have this problem?

Diagnosed over a year ago with “mild AFIB”, LBBB, 2000 CAC score and 40% blockage where LAD and D-1 come together. Cardiologist said lose some weight, light exercise, limit alcohol to 2 drinks per day and get a sleep study. I’ve checked all those boxes to some degree. Still need to take off 40 lbs (239 lbs. 6’) been on CPAP nightly for 120 days, limited alcohol, and just started walking 2 miles every other morning. What I’ve also found is I cannot tolerate working outside in 80 degree + heat over 30 minutes. My HR jumps to 140 and AFIB kicks in. IWatch 10 starts showing HR of 54, 140, back to 140 etc until I get inside and cool off. I believe the AFIB stops soon but it takes my HR hours to get back own to a normal resting rate in low 60s. I’ve also found anxiety exacerbates and triggers AFIB for me so I’m working on practicing deep breathing and other mindfulness techniques. I have a 6 month check up with cardiologist a week from today and hopeful he will consider an Ablation. I’m miserable not being able to be outside (can’t play a round of golf or yardwork). I’ve read on here many success stories on Ablation correcting and providing a better quality of life. It’s a process and some of it takes time. Control what you can. Good luck and good health.
