Low iron level in blood

Posted by rtmjohnson1 @rtmjohnson1, 2 days ago

I have low iron level in my blood. I've been diagnosed with congestive heart disease for years, but this just was diagnosed after I ended up hospitalized for pneumonia. The pneumonia took 2 days to cure, but the low iron kept me in there for two weeks, discharged with level of 129. Have you experienced anything like this?

I had low iron and was prescribed iron. Didn’t work effectively until I took it with citrus. I guess our bodies need citrus to absorb the iron. I’ve been squeezing a lemon and water every morning and taking my iron and it is working fine. Weird, but true for me. And, it’s on the Internet. You can even buy iron that has citrus already in it

@mavisbacon Vitamin C helps your body absorb iron. Calcium inhibits it. Don't ever drink milk anywhere near the time you take your iron.

I take my iron supplement every other day, my doctor said it's absorbed better that way.

You may already know that it is surprisingly common, and usually, almost always, easy to fix....but rarely quickly. Sometimes an emergency infusion is required, but most often a week or six of iron supplementation will work....ALWAYS under advice of a qualified physician or nurse practitioner.
You probably also already are aware that low iron affects the entire body, mostly because it means poor oxygen transport to organs and muscles. Everything from cognition to vision, from locomotion to sexual response, from kidneys to liver, digestion...it's all affected. Not to mention that you can be dizzy, out of breath...generally feeling rather unwell. It can be from diet, endocrine problems, or even a gastro-intestinal bleed that won't fix itself.

I have had low iron and stored iron ferritin for many years. In the past, I did have a prescription, but the side effects were bad for me
Many years later, I now take” Gentle iron” Three times a week and that has been enough to just to keep me in the safe zone.
Wish you the best. This is going to be a long road.
