Does anyone have a solution to help manage Reclast side effects?

Posted by dingus @dingus, Aug 15, 2024

Does anyone have a solution to combat Reclast side effects. I had the infusion a year and a half ago and the side effects started shortly after I had the infusion. I still have weak legs, swelling in feet, pain in bones, dizziness (serious dizziness), cold sweats, tired all the time and nervous twitching in bones. Any suggestions?

Jaynedanco, why did you stop Prolia after five years? I’ve been on it for two years. I have an appointment with an endocrinologist in October 2025 to discuss options, Prolia holiday.

@jessicamc I am sorry I did not respond to this earlier, I never saw this until now. My endocrinologist said that you could only be on Prolia for a certain number of years. She suggested I go off and go on the Reclast. But, i had no problems with the Prolia. It worked well for me. But, the Reclast was another story. I believe if you are on the Prolia too long it can affect the femur.

I had a consultation at Mayo with an endocrinologist in Sept. she was generous with time given and reviewed most recent studies. She did say the only option for me would be to go from Prolia to Reclast. Reclast isn’t perfect either, including risk of osteocronosis. It would require more followup testing, office visits. I live 150 miles from the clinic. The decision was up to me. I have had excellent results reversing bone loss with Prolia so I decided to stay with it. I started it at age 77, will soon be 79. She said there is a new research paper being published later this year on osteoporosis treatment. Perhaps something else will be available in the next couple of years. I’ve had a couple of acquaintances my age who were fearful of any osteoporosis treatments. Their lives have been upturned with other illnesses. I just received my 5th Prolia injection. Ive had lung surgery, had a stroke, manage Afib, and keep bouncing back. Will continue to watch my diet, good dental care, and take a couple of cruises. I appreciate your reply, thank you.

Just read your post. I took Reclast and was sick starting in hospital parking lot with headache and nausea. The symptoms of fatigue and severe body aches kept me immobile for 44 days. During that time, my primary and my endochrinologist promised me that I would not die. Docs refused OTC meds for symptoms because " possible allergies to drugs might interfere with those from Reclast. It was hell.

@cheryldance it is 3 months now and I am still having some pain. Thank goodness it is not as bad as it was.

I am a 68 year old male that retired a little over a year ago and just a month before retirement I received my first Reclast infusion and do not plan on ever getting another! I have had constant pain in both shoulders, left foot and nausea off and on to this day! I will always express, if I had my days to live over, I would not have this infusion. When I was a youth I was diagnosed with Rickets and malnutrition; this must be the culprit for the low bone density. I’m starting to have less and less confidence I physicians that just think it’s ok to push medication and not knowing 100% what some of the potential side effects can be! I do go to physical therapy biweekly and it seems to help a little; just staying as physical as I can!

@dannyandebbie Danny. I am doing acupuncture and it is helping some. Reclasp ruined my life for the last 3 months.

@ dingus & @heartfelt70 you are the ones I've been searching for! I've been thinking It was just me. I had my 2nd Reclast infusion on 6/10/24. I had decided not to take it due to the side effects I had with the 1st infusion but in the end I allowed my endocrinologist to talk me into it. I'm so regretting that now. I'm having generalized joint pain, worse in my hips and knees so bad that I can't sleep most nights. I'm having problems with ambulation as well. I'm almost positive it's the Reclast. These issues are relatively new for me and have now been going on for about 5 weeks. I talked to the endocrinologist a couple days ago and she states that it is not the Reclast and I should go see my primary care doc. Very discouraging but not surprised at her response. Where did you find the chlorophyll @heartfelt70? Thanks for your posts!

My wife has the exact same symptoms as dingus. It's been a month ago since she had the Reclast infusion and the symptoms still persist. Shaking, weakness and pain in the joints. Doe's anyone know of permanent damage that this drug causes?

@rambo1 i still hurt but not as bad. I have heard some people were in bed for a year. I have been going to acupuncturist and feel it has helped. Never take that drug again.

Hello, my endocrinologist has recommended that I start Reclast after finishing up with EVENITY. I have had 7 shots with EVENITY so far.
It would be helpful to hear if there are some people that have had Reclast without side effects assuming there are people without them. This forum is very helpful, however it would be beneficial to hear success stories to provide balanced view.

@bjgrace I have had 3-4 Reclast infusions and thought I had no adverse effects. Now that I've read about painful joints and dizziness, I'm not so sure...
I do have those symptoms but thought they were caused by old age. This uncertainly may be why there in confusion among the medical community. Personally, I plan a 1-2 year drug holiday from Reclast and will not accept another infusion of this drug.
