Kaleidoscope vision?

Posted by apteryx @apteryx, 4 days ago

Has anyone experienced this? Like looking through shards of broken glass with shimmering on the peripheries. Random and intermittent events, lasting ten to thirty minutes several times per day, then none for several days then starts again. No pain. I saw an ophthalmologist in case of retinal detachment.

“Kaleidoscope vision is a temporary vision change, usually lasting less than an hour, that causes you to see fractured images, shapes, and swirling colors. It is typically a symptom of an ocular migraine or a migraine with aura, but it also occurs with conditions including multiple sclerosis (MS), stroke, and diabetes. Kaleidoscope vision can be a sign of more serious conditions, including seizures and stroke, so it’s important to see a healthcare provider if it is the first time you're experiencing it.” American Academy of Ophthalmology
I never have migraines, nor have diabetes, MS etc. He didnt appear to have heard of it and reported that it had resolved as I didnt have it during the visit. Any suggestions for remedy appreciated.

Hi, I just read your message and it struck a chord with me, although there are some differences I do however have experience with ocular migraines with aura and it’s still unnerving to me. It began at least 10 years ago, started with a little zigzag around my eye, sometimes left and then right, then the next stage is the lightening bolt ( I call it ), starts to grow larger and move slowly either left or right, the finale is that it becomes a keliedescope and goes gradually away. They come at random and even now I get tense inside until it’s gone,

@frouke Thanks for your response. There must be multiple variations of this syndrome I think. Yours are different to mine. I dont get colour, yet, nor the lightning bolt nor migraines. Only had a few months so I am hoping I dont have it for ten years but you have reassured me that after that long there have been no dire developments like stroke or retinal issues. Thanks

I have had variations of this for years. Ocular migraines according to my eye doctor. They did get worse after each open heart surgery. Probably because the brain hates getting messed with going on and off the heart lung machine. They have lessened again over time. It is disconcerting when it happens. Occasionally it feels as though I’m getting a crossed eye but I’m not. Sometimes it helps if I close one eye. Luckily I have not had one of these last more than five or 10 minutes. Best of luck with yours and hope it is nothing major. 🤞

I’ve done some research on this topic but there’s not a lot known to date about this particular issue, it comes from the brain and has nothing to do with the eyes, also it seems to be hereditary. I am always a little concerned when they come up, my episodes are usually about 15-20 minutes in duration but I’ve read that some people have longer episodes complete with vision loss and severe headaches, this would be a terrible time for them.

I also get them on occasion (Keliedescope) and they last about 1/2 hour and after that I will get a mild headache.
I wish I could tell what is the cause, I am thinking it is caused when I have been doing strenuous work and gets my neck sore.--Due to me having neck degenerative issues.

I also have had this for about 20 years. My ophthalmologist said they are like the aura of a migraine without the migraine. It lasts 15-20 minutes. Mine I call the "sparklies" because I see a sparkly crescent shape that if I'm reading, part of a sentence (a few words ) are missing. It only concerned me the first time. I know it will pass and I can go on with whatever work I'm doing (except reading😊).

Good to know thanks. So many varieties. A whole community.

@jer22 Yes I too think neck issues related. I had nasty neck spasms post head and neck cancer radiation therapy and often wonder if this vision is some sort of offshoot of that as "Trigeminal nerve (CN V): Providing sensations in your eyes, most of your face and inside your mouth. It also allows you to chew food. "

Hi,
This sounds really serious. Perhaps you should see another opthamologist and your doctor. It sounds like the first opthamologist that you saw didn't take it too seriously. Are you a senior? They often think you are just getting older and leave it at that. We only have one set of eyes and need to make sure they are working right. I've worn glasses since I was 6 years old and I'm 79. I see my eye doctor whenever anything occurs with my eyes that isn't right.
Prayer also works. Just give all your problems up to God. He made you and he can fix you!
I'll say a prayer for you too.
I wish you the best.

@jer22 I think you have a good point about the neck being involved somehow, I often suffer from neck pain due to disc’s trouble as well as my lower back, I’m sure there is some kind of connection to do with all the sensitive nerves in that area.
