Frequency of flareups for COPD enough to have to go on anabiotic’s

Posted by romoney1 @romoney1, Jul 6, 2025

I was wondering how many frequencies people seem to have say a month six months mine seem to be every month and a half or two I have to go to the hospital and get antibiotics and steroid shot in order to get rid of the excess phlegm. I can’t get rid of enough of it. It just keeps producing. Can anybody give me the light up on that?

I have had multiple flare ups the last few months. I have had rescue steroids and antibiotics on hand. I have found even just the antibiotics work. I have not discerned the underlying cause. I di not have a great deal if phlegn, just significant SOB. I have started using mullien and NAC, as well as mucunex when I start feeling full chested more than normal. They do help thin out the mucus.
I have omly been in meds since 3/2025. Breztri, albuterol neblizer × 4 daily, and O2 therapy.
I try not to let it slow me down too much, but there are days when being productive just doesn't happen. Going back to the pulmonologist later in October, and we will decide which sreps to take next. I don't lijexto use antibiotics often, but if it is necessary, I will use them prophalactically.
Jugst as everyone else...I an still navigating 😊😊

I find I lose a couple of pounds and then have flare ups. Not sure why other than it's a sign for me to start slowing down. My Dr. will give me prednisone to prevent the exacerbation. I don't like taking it but it beats a few days in the hospital (and a big bill!). You might want to ask your Dr. about Trelegy - an inhaler. It might work better for you. Good luck! Take care.

@pinnochio820 do you have trouble sleeping on prednisone or Brestri?

I have been on arithomycin ( 500mg)for years 3 times a week. I also take Ipatropium Bromide nasal spray twice a day. I have severe allergies and I've notice in the past anytime I became ill or had exasperation the root cause seem to be my sinuses. Knock on wood no ER visits for 7 years now.

@lizjlb
I have not had any noticible issues. I have always had weird/ crappy sleep. If I choose to rake something, it is usually 2-3 magnesium or melatonin (only 3 mg).

I have a couple questions… Are you on a low-dose prednisone forever?… Also, are you on oxygen during the day and you sleep with oxygen at night?

REPLY

I only use prednisone with flare-ups. During flares, I use my O2 all time, including at night. I normally use my O2 during any activity I do wear my O2 at night.
I am curently on a rescue round of antibiotics and prednosine starting last Thursday. I have not needed much 02 since Sunday.
I play life by ear. I have had 3 flares in the last 3 months, but I feel better after this round than I have the others. We'll see what the next few weeks brings. My pulmonologist told me that summers (at least here in north central Florida) are the worst for
people with COPD. Hot, humid, and tons of allegens floating around.
