Coming for the first time next week to Rochester, Minnesota

Posted by talllady1958 @talllady1958, Sep 25, 2025

Hi, I'm Jackie. I'm coming for the first time next week and I'm nervous for many reasons. I have no idea what to expect. Boy do you guys start appointments early 715 holy cannoli 🙂 seriously I have a couple questions. I'm hoping y'all can help. My brother was supposed to be coming with me to help kind of keep track of what I'm told cause I'm so nervous. I know I won't remember everything and there's so much information to remember so, but something came up with his wife needing to go to her doctor for an MRI and he needs to be there which I completely understand. My question is would they be offended if asked if I could record what they tell me just so I can explain it to my family because I know I won't remember everything on how they explain things or answer questions but I don't want tooffend anyone either. it's only because I forget stuff so easy heck I'm 67 . My second question would be could you give me any idea of what your first day of appointments would be like the basic first day evaluation it looks like a full eight hour day. I was just curious what to expect and much to prepare for physically..
I would very much appreciate. I'm coming Monday the 29th with my first appointment on Tuesday the 30th. Thank you in advance.
Jackie

@talllady1958, a bit more information for when you talk to them today….

After thinking, I realize I had two appointments that I was able to connect my husband in via phone at home. They were is two different departments. The first one was super straight-forward. The second department had never dealt with that request so had to ask and get back with me. Just something to be aware of that you may need to be a little persistent in asking to find the right person that can find out. My experience is that everyone you talk to will want to help you.

I hope your travel and appointments go well. I would love to hear how your experience is, and if you are willing to share more about what brings you to Mayo, and even if you have questions while you are there……you’ve got this!

@jlharsh I so appreciate your help. I suddenly about two years ago or three years ago now almost came down. Woke up when Sunday morning and I was in the back of an ambulance. I apparently had had a stroke and was having seizures. They don't know why I had gastric bypass about 15 years ago, and I started having problems again. I never had had problems before, but I started having problems with losing weight again even trying and now in a year I've lost over 100 pounds and I'm getting dangerously thin and having all kinds of stomach problems and starting to have seizures again with my medication and my doctors here in Tulsa cannot figure it out. I'm thankfully so thankful I'm getting in here. I'm 6 foot tall and down to 122 pounds this morning considering I used to be 426 pounds this is weird lol and not at all what I wanted in life I have no strength I have no energy which makes me so nervous about these all day long appointments, but I'm gonna do it. I can do all things, right!!!

I hope that made sense. Sorry I'm voice messaging but basically I had gastric bypass 15 years ago. I lost almost 250 pounds suddenly started losing again without trying and getting sick really bad. Dozens of doctor appointments dozens of dozens of test and no answers here in Tulsa very very scared.

The doctors are so informative and they keep asking if you have any questions. Be sure to write down anything you are concerned about. It is very easy to forget when the doctors are giving you so much information. I think there would be no problem with you recording. Mayo clinic is a wonderful place and the doctors are always very kind and caring. Wishing you the best of everything on your journey.

@talllady1958,
Some of previous comment provide advice on your first visit. I would like to add few more comments.

A 7:15 appointment is not unusual. You will be surprised how many people around that early.

I want to warn you there is lot of construction in Rochester. If your hotel is not in downtown area and has shuttle, use that option. Parking is available but difficult at this time. Give yourself plenty of time to arrive on time. See this web site for additional information: https://www.mayoclinic.org/rochester-construction

If you have not had your per-appointment phone call, it is to review allergies and prescriptions.

On portal, if there is any forms / questionnaires to fill out, I advise doing prior to appointment so do not have to do when you check-in.

You may also may want to check out: "How to make the most of your Mayo Clinic appointment." https://www.mayoclinic.org/patient-visitor-guide/how-to-make-the-most-of-your-appointment

Would you care to share what section your appoint is with.

@talllady1958, I am reading your comment about your energy level and the number of appointments you have scheduled when you get to the Clinic in Rochester. It is totally understandable that you feel nervous. I hope you feel comfortable just taking one thing at a time, and speaking up to let them know when you are overwhelmed or it becomes too much.

You are going to a good place that is prepared for you. You only need to show up and let them help you through their process. You’ve got this!

I look forward to hearing about your experience.

@sandy8043 thank you Sandy. I guess I've just gotten really nervous with doctors. I have been going to them now for three years and I've seen so many. I don't have any idea how many actually I had one fire me for asking a question about a medication I've been on for 30 years so I get kind of nervous... literally I swear all I did was ask a question to ask him to look at it to see if maybe it could be adding to what was going on and if so, could we maybe think about weaning me off of it and he got all hottie and upset and told me he thought I should find a new doctor I tried to apologize I didn't get ugly or anything. I just said maybe on her next visit could we talk about this because I had read some material about it causing seizures and massive unexplained weight loss which is part of what I'm experiencing and he got upset. Told me I needed a new doctor so I'm a little about it but thank you. I really do appreciate knowing that they're open to discussion thoughtful discussion at least

I too ask a lot of questions after all it is my body. You should be happy to leave that physician. He did you a favor.
My deceased brother was a vascular surgeon and he always recommended good communications. Good for him and his patient to understand what was going on. I am happy you are not seeing him/her.
My husband had bypass surgery 15 years ago at Ochsner Hospital in Louisiana. Great surgeon. After his normal day he spoke with my husband and I for an hour to answer any questions ( which I had a lot).
While meeting with us he had a call that later that night he would be on the team for transplant surgery.
Love that doctor! Compassionate, Patient and knowledgeable!
