Are there new breakthroughs for Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm surgeries?

Posted by suzie71 @suzie71, Dec 10, 2023

I have a AAA, and I am being monitored for the size. It has stayed stable now for 3 years with a 3.9 Cm in size. My fear is that I know the surgery is one of the hardest surgeries to have. I know years ago that survival was very slim, but I would like to know what to expect now if I have to undergo the surgery at some point,

Hello Justin! My surgeon told me that they will go up through my groan, both sides and place a fabric covered stint at the saccular aneurysm to cut off the blood supply to the aneurysm. The part that has me really stressed out is that the colon gets blood from the arota and sometimes (1%) persons need to have some of their colon removed. I do no understand any of that and he explained it twice. Here again, I have a saccular aneurysm and it is from what I was told, more likely to repture than others. Mine is 1 3/8 " in length. Prayers for everyone. Best Regards, John

My AAA is also saccular. Wondering...did you have the surgery? I'm anxious to hear more about EVAR. Can't seem to find much about it on here.

Hi: That is great news. One of my doctors told me that by the time I need the surgery they might be able to just scan me to dissolve it. He said that in a funny way to make me relax, but Thank God for all the new forms of surgery that are less invasive for everything.
9.5 is extremely huge!!!

Hi: Your message was so encouraging. I have had my Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm now going on 5 years, and I go next week to have it checked for size. So far it has not gotten to a 4, but I will know if it has grown next week. Did you say that you went home the same day? I am under the impression that its a bit of a hospital stay after the surgery.
I have so many health issues, and I do not want to worry about this AAA right now.
Praying that you continue to do well. I am so glad that they are coming up with better treatments for this condition than the choices we had years ago.
God Bless You!!

I’m so glad I came upon your post. My husband who turns 70 this week was diagnosed with a genetic mutation called Loeys-Dietz Syndrome about 3 years ago. This condition causes aneurysms. He is scheduled to have an EVAR AAA repair on 10/8/25. It measures 5.2 cm and the vascular surgeon at Froedtert Hospital in Milwaukee stated that the old guideline of waiting until 5.5 cm has been lowered to 5.0 cm. We are terrified to be honest especially me. Your experience is encouraging. I hope my husband’s surgery goes as well as yours. Hope you’re still doing well.

I had an emergency EVAR in 2020. They put my procedure on a DVD so you probably find it on you tube or the internet

I had my procedure at Froedert also! The Vascular Surgeon was Neal Mansukani. He left, and now I have Dr. Dyer who monitors me once a year.

@ cyn22
My vascular surgeon is Dr. Peter Rossi whom I like very much. Did you have a good experience and outcome?
