Has anyone had a low platelet count of just 1?
I developed a bleeding mouth problem a few days ago followed quickly by leg rashes and bruising. Blood test gave doctors a surprise as it was only ONE … put on immunoglobulin drip (8 bottles) then a cocktail if pills (haven’t got names yet) and next day I was up to a count of FIVE. Hospital staff say they’ve not seen such a low count. Anyone else out there with similar? Any advice welcome.

There are so many different things that could be considered. What’s important is that you’re under the care of an excellent hematologist with connections to a team of other doctors if needed. And yes, my platelets went down to one, I had petechiae and blood blisters.

6 ReactionsI had a low count of all 3 in the very low under 10s. What i thought was fatigue was what the doctor said need immediate transfusion that evening. I was hospitalized 4 days. It had a cause. 12 rounds of chemo in 12 weeks, then 1 dose of Red Devil. Emergency rooms and critical care units have seen those low numbers. Your marrow is not producing.

5 ReactionsI had a zero one time. I knew something was off, called the clinic weekend number and got in. They took a quick lab and then went into quiet but urgent action. Happily I had no bleeds etc!!!! It was during a Chemo cycle.

4 ReactionsYes, I had mine dip to exactly 1 between chemotherapy consolidation treatments. Transfusions and time have brought it back to normal.

4 Reactionsmy WBC is a 2. I was just diagnosed with AML . waiting on 2 more test results. May need a bone marrow transplant. can you start meds right away. and can chemo help.?
I saw my primary Dr in June for a bug bite, She did blood work. my numbers are good. but CBC low RBC enlarged. this all so difficult to understand. where do start? Tennessee oncology. is where I'm going. my Dr. seems very smart. wife mother and gonna

3 ReactionsHi @debrasue, welcome to Mayo Connect. Being newly diagnosed with AML I know you have a ton of questions. I’m here with answers for you, along with many of us who have had AML and some have gone on to have a bone marrow transplant. That was my story from 6 years ago. I’m healthy, no sign of disease and living my best 2nd life after my treatment for AML and bone marrow transplant.
With the other tests you’re having done I’m assuming the doctors will be checking for genetic mutations which may be the underlying cause for the AML. Those test results will determine the type of treatment that will be required.
To answer your question about chemo/treatments. Yes, meds would be started right away in order to get the proliferating leukemic cells under control. Chemo does help.
However, with some specific mutations chemo and a bone marrow transplant may be suggested. But first your hematologist/oncologist will be waiting on the results from your tests. Was there also a bone marrow biopsy done?

4 ReactionsMy platelets were 3 on November 15, 2025. Regular 6 month check-up. Had IV steroid four days and IVIG twice. Went from 3,7,12,20,41,79,125, released from hospital. Hit high of 272 and started falling and got down to 67. I started taking blackstrap non sulfur molasses and it has gone up to 113. That has natural iron in it. They gave me some iron at the hospital. Dr. told me to get blood checked every 2 weeks now. I go back on 1/28. Praying they go up some more. I have ITP without a cause yet.
@pwsauder57 My platelets are currently at 47. I'm interested in how you take the black strap molasses. How much and do you put it in something or just swallow it? I would like to try it!
