Small Intestine Bacteria Overgrowth (SIBO)
My wife, after years of suffering from debilitating nausea and fatigue, has finally been diagnosed with SIBO as confirmed by a hydrogen breath test. It is estimated the bacteria has had at least two years to grow and may be well established. She has started on Xifaxan, at $35 per pill, but it is estimated that elimination of the SIBO may take up to six months. Her day now starts with her waking up with nausea and when she has a cup of tea and toast in the morning she gets sick within fifteen minutes thereafter. Her sickness is accompanied by violent belching, and at times she regurgitates liquid vile. The only drug she has for nausea is Zofran which does nothing for her. Are there any other SIBO sufferers that are experiencing the same symptoms, and what are you taking to reduce the nausea?

Your protein powder is the source of your SIBO in the first place if it is whey.
"Mayo diagnosed me with SIBO twice. Two unsuccessful 2 week rounds of xifaxan. After extensive testing with no definitive answers for multiple gastro/neurological problems, I continue to have symptoms of IBS and SIBO."
That is because you did not find and get rid of the food source of your SIBO. In my case it what whey protein I take for lifting weights. Switched to beef protein shakes and problem solved.
The FODMAP diet is required to control SIBO. Find a specialist dietician.
Wife no longer has SIBO and the diagnosis she had it is questionable.
That’s great. But the SIBO breath test is pretty accurate. I’m free of it so long as I keep the bacteria in order. It’s a bit like herding cats at times.
No it is not. I've been on that diet. I was placed on that diet by a gastroenterologist that did not have a clue about SIBO. The issue has absolutely nothing to do with FODMAP.
Thanks for your response. I also have to ingest a lot of protein each day as an athlete. Have been relying on commercial protein shakes, eggs, fish, cheese, chicken, peanut butter. Where do you get your beef protein shakes?
It works very well if the diet is used rigorously. I went to a SIBO specialist dietician, referred my my consultant. She told me that most people who say it doesn’t work have found it too difficult to stick to it. I understand that, especially if the patient has a family to cook for, too. You have to be patient and determined not to stray. It takes about three months for real, long term results to appear. Sorry you didn’t have a good experience with it, but I would say find the right dietitian and really go for it.Don’t give up. That’s what the damn bacteria want you to do 😢 I know I’ll have to be on it for good - not ideal, but I feel much better.
Are you a professional consultant or a food biologist? The research was done at Monash University in Australia.
Everyone who is posting here is doing so because doctors haven't figured it out and are misdiagnosing. I posted my observations along with my personal research spanning years on the matter. One of the symptoms everybody is reporting (and I too have experienced) associated with SIBO is malabsorption. There is only one way malabsorption can happen: Hypochlordia/Achlorhydia. How does that happen then? There are only two things that can shut down your gastric acid production resulting in a Hypochlordia/Achlorhydia. One is a valve (i forget the name of it) located inside the body that can malfunction cutting off your gastric acid production resulting in a less than desirable ph. The second thing that can shut down your gastric acid production is Candida. Well if you know oregano oil has strong antifugal properties, then you obviously take some oregano oil and see what happens. What happens is the Candida will immediately retreat from wince it came the intestines. That allows you to determine it is not a malfunctioning valve. Candida is always in your intestines and that is where it is supposed to stay. Your acid production will immediately turn on once you use the oregano oil. In my case, I got caught with a full load of Betaine Hydrochloride pills in my stomach when my gastric acid resumed upon administering oregano oil. That resulted in me refluxing a whole lot of acid. So much so I actually burned my esophagus. It was burned for several days. So now you have established positively that you had Candida. If you have no stomach acid bacteria is obviously free to move upward from the intestines to the stomach where it has no business being. When that happens you're infected (SIBO). The bacteria then proceeds to strip your stomach of it's protective mucus coating inflaming the stomach lining. You now have gastritis as well. The distension people are reporting is swelling from gastritis. You will also see a combination of swelling and bloating at the very same time for different reasons associated with the overall ailment. Sometimes you'll see bloating and sometimes you'll see swelling or both. You must learn to distinguish which is which. This is not that hard. You simply administer the oregano oil and the right antibiotic and you're done.
