Post Sleeve Surgery Issues
Anyone know how long the gas lasts after surgery? I realized there’d be some right after, but reading it can last 6-9 months. If so, is there something to take for it?
Thanks for any advise

Thanks for asking Lisa, yes it still happens. With the sneezing I also usually get a runny nose which requires blowing my nose at the table which I think is uncouth & repulsive to the others at or near my table🙄. And like I said earlier sometimes it’s just the hiccups with no sneezing. I did the sneezing thing at Wednesday night supper at church last night while eating very light. When I do the sneezing thing it’s like 6-8 sneezes, not just one or two. Never ever done it in my life until the sleeve. BUT the sleeve was a great thing for me.
Hello! I had a sleeve 8 yrs ago and this just started happening to me. I agree it's super frustrating and people do stare. The intense need to blow the nose is awful too. Plus, the added mucus drip makes my stomach feel worse.
I never knew this was a thing. I'm wondering why this has just started now? I didn't even eat half a peanut butter toast and started sneezing - at a measured and steady pace. It's not "uncontrollable sneezes" it's a very odd "reactive sneeze" that is about 10 minimum and then I lose count.
I had an old-school Gastroplasty back in 1982. Every time I get full, I always sneeze (anywhere from 4 times to 6 times in rapid succession). I also hiccup, but less frequently. I always have a kleenex with me when I eat. I'm glad to know I am not alone.
Just like me. Well if this is the worst thing we will have to suffer through from this surgery I’d do it all over again no problem.
Interesting, it’s funny they never told us about this and when I asked while going back for a regular checkup they said they had no idea. Now I see it’s pretty common to have this and it also makes a lot of sense when you think about it.
Sounds pretty much like me except I’m 7 years in with a sleeve. It’s almost like an allergy when it happens, runny nose and all that. You’re a long time in and I think that’s great. Without these surgeries we might not even be here to sneeze and hiccup.
So very true!
I also had weight loss surgery. I had the sleeve done back in 2014. I lost about 150 lbs. I was feeling so wonderful. Then I had 3 back surgeries in one year 2020 then a hip replacement in 2022 which did not go well and still have issues then another back surgery this April 2025. Other surgeries in between. With my hip replacement and back I am in constant level 8 pain. I use a walker too. I take pain pills that keep the pain down from a screaming pain.. I sit a lot anymore. I still do exercises for my back when I can. All this lead up to me gaining at least 50 lbs back! I am so very upset.. I am having to buy larger clothes again. I do catch myself snacking either from boredom or being depressed about this whole situation and trying to deal with I might be this way till I die. I try to keep popcorn by me to snack on, instead of grabbing for a cookie. What do I do. Meal preparation is very hard on me. If I can not make a meal within 10 minutes, forget it. So I have to have many grab and microwave and sit down. I have not increased my food intake that I had 50 lbs ago. I also have Crohn's and what I can eat is very touchy. Fiber diets kill me, This has to stop, my weight gain. I did look through some other posts and the advice and articles that people suggest reading. They are no help. I would try the weight loss drugs out now, but they are out of my reach financially. I was told by Drs to try them. WHAT am I to do? I really think there is nothing. Before I know it I will be the size of a house again.
I’m sorry you are in such pain. That must be very difficult. I had some chronic back pain years ago, but it resolved thank goodness. I hope yours improves too.
My friends and family members with back and joint issues tell me they need to lose weight as the extra weight aggravates their condition. Will losing the 50 you gained back put you at your goal?
From what I’m told, patients who need the weight loss meds can get them if needed. I’m not sure what that means…..contact the med company….get free coupons….extra help from government or insurance? Idk. You could check though.
I struggle with snacking too much, so I’m trying to avoid having snack foods in the house. That’s why I rarely buy popcorn and when I do, I get the snack size. I stopped buying nuts because I struggle with portion size. I try to limit my snacks to fresh fruit or yogurt. And, I don’t have cookies around to tempt me. I do choose to have a glass of wine on the weekends.
Could you consult with a nutritionist or dietitian to compile a menu for the week. If you have a set plan in place it’ll be easier to have that meal ready. I eat a lot of the same dishes, but that’s ok because I like them. I find I will stick with the right foods if I really enjoy them. I found that the weight loss and maintenance is really a lifestyle adjustment. Everyone does it their own way.
Good luck with your weight loss and upcoming surgeries. Do you have someone to help you with shopping, transport and meal prep? There are pre-made meals you can order online. There are options with good nutritional content. That’s an option to explore.
I really appreciate you taking the time to try to help me.
As I said I have Crohn's and it is a hard to deal with. Fruit is hard on me. Any roughage is. I have to eat fruit at certain times in the day. Morning is the only time I can eat fruit. I live with my son so some snacks are in the house. The cookie I might snack on are animal crackers, nothing real high in calories. I also take many pills and have a very sensitive stomach and need to take pills with food or I get stomach pain. I am really a mess with many medical issues all my life it seems. Almost died twice but almost does not count HAHA. My son believes there is nothing that can kill me but we know that is not true.
My insurance will not pay for a nutritionist or dietician. I have been looking into places like Home Chef, but that can be expensive too. My son shops for me and I have a long term management plan. I have asked for their help but nothing so far.
As for weight loss drugs, I did contact one of the companies for help and they never got back to me. I went back to my Bariatric Drs and ask for a revision of the sleeve. They refused. They would give me the weight loss drugs, but I can not afford the cost. Do you know they are only $99 in Europe? We are getting ripped off.
I agree the right foods make the difference if I could eat them. I told my gastroenterologist once that I do great on a Twinkie diet than real food. He laughed
Yes, you have to change your whole life to maintain weight loss.
Thanks again.
You have brought up things I have been dealing with my whole life and the sleeve operation was like a miracle for me. I was doing so well for such a long time, then wham surgery after surgery taking a yr or more to recover. I even had PT for years. I think food is giving me that comfort that I can not find anywhere else. I am staying active mentally, but it is just not the same. I hardly get sleep too.
I hope your life is going great for you and you are blessed with all you need.
Thank you once again for taking time out of your life to try to help me.
