Kidney transplant: Just finished evaluation at Mayo AZ

Have you done all the medical tests necessary and they approved you for a transplant?
The donors will go through very similar tests. I just had mine done the first week of August in PHX. All together there were about 13( with 2 of those being zoom meetings). It took about 3 days to complete. I still have one more to do and I’ll be done. Depending on what they find with the first tests, they may or may not, continue to have more. After they have the results of all tests, their medical team gets together to either accept, or reject the potential donor. It’s a process…

The donors will be notified if they pass the tests and if they are a match pretty quickly!

Friends, know that you don’t have to be a match to save the life of your friend or loved one. Through the National Kidney Registry, you can be a match for someone who desperately needs a kidney and then your friend/family member will be matched with someone else. A beautiful system, if you would like to know more about this please ask your caregivers. As I write this, my son who was not a match for me, saved the life of a young father in the Bay Area and now I await my own living donor match. So, in a sense my son saved two lives.

Love this, that does save more than one life when you are not a match from someone who stepped forward to help you. In many ways for many other reasons it is the best way to go.

Good luck. Living donation is the best way to go and I hope you get matched and approved. I am starting my transplant evaluation, but have already prepared myself for my potential living donors to be denied. They are pretty strict when it comes to the health and safety of living donors, they have to be. Then I was blessed/cursed to be handed a blood type of O so the pool of possible donors is pretty small. But my time will come, just as yours will.

Hi, @coreyweubank and Welcome to Connect. I know that you are going to be undergoing an exhausting series of consults, exams, tests as you continue your evaluation to be placed on the UNOS transplant list with eligibility for a kidney transplant.
My transplant was 16 years ago. I was blessed to receive a simultaneous liver and kidney transplant at Mayo Rochester. I am in total agreement with what you already said, "...My time will come...," . I hope that everything goes well for you.

Hello...we are newbies here..husband is considering transplant-numbers have gotten low. But you said something thats concerning. If recipient has had a blood transfusion in the past can he still get a kidney?

The most important criteria is the blood groups should be compatible between the donor and the recipient. In situations where recipient was been thru' a blood transfusion, the Transplant evaluation team may conduct more tests as it is possible there are additional characteristics induced by the blood transfusion.

He can still get a kidney. Let your transplant docs decide what the best course is for him. This is all overwhelming at first, but one step at a time. Blessings to you.
