Lowering LDL to help bones

I recently consulted with Keith McCormick, DC, (author of the excellent book "Great Bones"), who said I have to get my LDL down. Until reading about it in his book, I had never heard of high cholesterol affecting bones. High cholesterol runs in my family. Since the consultation I have been eating almost only healthy fats and reducing my fat intake overall. For example, I used to eat a fair amount of cheese and crackers and am switching to carrot sticks and hummus or baba ganoush. More fish and chicken and less red meat. It has resulted in a little weight loss but also seems to have eliminated edema at the ankles. I have very thin bones to start with and 5 vertebral fractures. I wonder how long it takes to show a difference in LDL. Has anyone has success reducing cholesterol with diet?

I’ve been fortunate in that statins haven’t adversely affected me, accept for simvastatin. It gave me insomnia, and it was brutal. I can’t even imagine what you went through.

Hi, sbranen - As I have posted, I am highly allergic to statins, so am trying 100% Extra Virgin Olive Oil 1-3 tablespoons per day (which I dipinto with Croissants and sometimes add yummy Balsamic vinegar I green 3-4 cups of Green Tea, et Salmon, salads and various nuts per day. Of course cut out that candy I used to adore, most breads and other carbohydrates, no red meat, etc. We'll see what happens when I visit the doctor in September and get a blood draw. EVOO is also good for inflammation, which I still have in my Achilles tendon thanks to statins. Wishing you the best 🙁

Insomnia is just another thing going on with no clues. I so wish I could have stayed on statins. They really did help. Even Red Yeast Rice is a natural alternative but discovered it has a component in it that works like a statin. So good to hear people with success.

Check out my comments on this topic. I had the same experience with statins. My body hates them. I am trying Extra Virgini Olive Oil and Green Tea, etc. etc. We'll see. best to you! donna

Please let me know how your experience with olive oil works out. I have arterial sclerosis, and worry about adding any additional fat to my system.

Agree with EVOO. I cook a lot with it. haven't really tried just dipping in it or taking a spoonful. Finding real green tea that is beneficial can be overwhelming. What kind do you use? I do love bread and try to stick with real sourdough randomly but also try to keep away from it.

Agree with EVOO. I cook a lot with it. haven't really tried just dipping in it or taking a spoonful. Finding real green tea that is beneficial can be overwhelming. What kind do you use? I do love bread and try to stick with real sourdough randomly but also try to keep away from it.

Hi, loyd1957 - I drink 2-4 cups of Uncle Lees Green Tea per day, and ingest about 4 tbsps of Extra Virgin Olive Oil per day, usually by dipping a crescent in it. The Crescent is so flavorful. Not low in calories though 🙂 I sometimes add balsamic vinegar to the EVOO. It tastes really yummy. I have read that it is a good idea to ingest EVOO with meals. I might try that vs. consuming 2 Tbsp. of EVOO in the a.m. and 2 Tbsps in the p.m. EVOO is great for appetite control. Just a note: In the Mediterranean, people sometime consume an entire Liter in one week!!! That sounds like overkill to me, but hey, with the Mediterranean diet and EVOO, people in the Mediterranean and in Blue Zones in the U.S. are living very long lives!! Over 100! Just sayin' 🙂 Me: just trying to get my cholesterol down a little. I read that a cholesterol level of 290 indicates a genic component. Onward and Upward! 🙂 d.

Hi, sbranen -
EVOO apparently make blood veins more supple and helps control cholesterol among other wonderful things. You should read everything you can get your hands on about what EVOO does. The good sources, of course, are Mayo Clinic, Cleveland Clinic and Harvard Medical. There are tons of others. My Blood draw is in late September. Will wrote a post about it here, when I get the results in Oct. There is a lot of contention in the medical community about statins and whether they actually postpone death. Some doctors believe other issues contributing to death trump high cholesterol. Go figure! More later.... d.

My cholesterol dropped to around total of 175 on changing from vegetarian to vegan. However, as has been discussed here, the lipoprotein A and B, which is genetic, is very high and I’m grateful the cardiologist checked it. I am taking Repatha and Zetia to lower my cholesterol, purportedly to help offset the genetic components that can’t be changed much, from what I understand.

Also, all this talk on olive oil - keeping in mind one tablespoon is 120 calories. Fat is fat. Are there scientific studies that say EVOO is good for us? I use it sparingly in cooking out of concern for weight gain, which happens far more rapidly the older I get, even though I workout and eat fairly well.

So true - you can really pack the pounds on even with all the “clean” foods. I log my calories, and that’s how I stay on track. Otherwise, I start drifting and before I know it 5 new pounds have appeared.

Exactly! I did look online and there is good research through Harvard and a government website about the benefits of EVOO, though. Maybe a bit more olive oil and less cookies? 😂
