Acid Reflux and its Symptoms: Are they chronic?

I have been diagnosed with Barrett's Esophagus since 2008 and have been omeprazole 40 mg twice a day. First 20 mg once a day which was increased in June 2016 when an endoscopy showed dysphasia. Then it changed to high dysphasia in Feb. 2017. Now I have stage 1a adenocarcinoma and am still just on a treatment to keep having ablations to try to clear it up. I am concerned if this is enough and wondered if anyone else is at this stage in treatment. I am waiting and watching I wish I knew the full answer. I have changed my eating habits and think that is helping and trying to be careful to eat more fruits and vegetables and perhaps buy more organic.

Linda, did your care provider suggest a specific diet to follow or foods to avoid? What about consulting with a dietician?

Seems like it is progressing in the wrong direction. How often do you go in for a scope? When I had high grade dysplasia I was going in every 3 months for an RFA treatment and mucosal resections . I no longer have dysplasia and have been moved to going to Mayo every 6 months which is in 2 weeks. I would check with my Gastroenterologist re your eating habits. Good luck

I was just told on June 13 after having an EMR (resection) of tissue in my esophagus that I have a adenomarcinoma cell whicxh they removed, but that I also had a hiatel hernia. I have had four endoscopes and two ablations but never was told about my hiatel hernia. The doctor mentioned it but didn't explain how it affected my GERD. I guess they assume we know. I have taken omeprozole for 9 years 20 mg once a day and then upped it to 40m,,,, twice a day for the past six months. I have also tried protonix 2x's a day and I like it just fine. It is actually a little smaller oval pill. It does control my acid, but obviously something is going on or I wouldn't have high dysplasia. I will be having another ablation on Aug. 30 and will see if it takes care of the high dysplasia Barrettts Esophagus. So far, the other two did not change the diagnosis. I have asked for others who have had similar experiences to reach out to me to share their experiences but so far, I have only heard about survivors who had had the big operation of esophagetomy. They are satisfied that they did the right thing, but am told that I am not a candidate for that. I am interested i hearing from the people who have cured their BE with ablations. Are any out there who have cured their BE???I did read of one person today who apparently has gotten rid of the
BE. That was encouraging.

I assume Protonix is workig in that I don't notice much Gerd any more but obviously I have BE with high dysplasia so I question how well omeprozole was working. I am told that I must take a PPI and have scopes for the rest for my life. I would like to be told that I can be cured, but no one has told e that straight out.

I had Barrett's Esophagus with high grade dysplasia,. After 2+ years of RFA treatments along with a few mucosal resections all my dysplasia was gone as of 5 1/2 months ago. Going back to Rochester Mayo in 2 weeks for hopefully just a scope. I will have to monitor my esophagus for rest of my life since the Barrett's and HGD was in the area of my hyatial hernia which doesn't allow me to have the wrap. I wish I was a candidate for the wrap since I need to take 80 mg of Nexium a day. I would ask your MD if your HGD is in the area of the hernia, if not talk to him/her re the wrap or possibly the Linx. Hope this gives you some hope.

Hi my name is lynn. I also have Barrett's esophagus. I also had ulcers. I was on protonix for about 5 Weeks and it healed my ulcer. Had to have endoscopy and colonoscopy to check ulcers and I constantly produce polyps. That's when they found Barrett's esophagus. Doctor that did scope changed me to Prilosec cause apparently I have silent acid reflux. I never had heartburn just terrible stomach and right side pain. Sorry to hear you have high dysphasia. Are they just treating that with protonix? It worked very well for my ulcers healed it in 5 weeks. Don't know why doctor changed drug to Prilosec except he thinks it's better for tightening LES in esophagus. Hope you feel better.

You might want to ask your MD about taking vitamin D3 since long term use of PPI can affect calcium uptake.
