small red blotches on skin

Posted by kerrywp @kerrywp, Jul 24, 2025

Hi,
Has anyone had small red blotches randomly appear on your legs or arms?
Flat, not raised and doesn't itch. I think it is a side effect from prednisone but my rheumatologists say they have not seen that. I finally decided it was benign and I have just ignored it. But thought I would ask all of you.
Thanks!!

Yes, it’s purport, the result of skin thinning with long term prednisone use. There is another thread on this. Add to this older age plus lifetime sun damage, and they can look pretty bad. They do go away, but takes a long time.
My rheum doc is very familiar with this.

Yes, I have had a terrible time with the skin blotches and bleeding when opened since on prednisone

Also, when I was in remission for 3+ years and off prednisone these red blotches pretty much stopped appearing.

I'm off prednisone since May and the blotching has not gotten any better

As I tapered off my blotches improved. I’m now off 5 wks and don’t have them appearing, old ones clearing. Good luck

I just bought some “sleeves” to protect my arms since they are constantly bleeding. It is helping.

I had been on blood thinner for two months ( post heart ablation procedure for afib) and also RA Dr. had me one 20mg prednisone for two months , with no red blotches , but i had IV rituxan and a week later the exact same red blotches showed up on my arms . My Dr told me to stay on prednisone for a couple more months until the rituxan ( wipes out B cells , associated to RA)
My cardi told me the blood thinner caused the red blotches ( exactly same as yours in the photo)
Red blotches did not go away , i got biopsy and the dermatologist left voice mail telling me not to worry ( did not say what these blotches were , and has not returned my calls)
So , I was having RA pain my Rheumatologist told me to take 20 then 15 then 10 then 5 mg to taper off , I took 20 mg and felt numbed and my hearing was severely impaired , 20mg was way too much for my system ! I am now taking 10 a day and plan on dropping to 5mg next for two weeks and then stop , I have only been taking prednisone for 4 months so feel that I should be able to ween myself off by December .
