Brand Name Cymbalta by Eli Lilly is being discontinued!

Posted by rockerjock79 @rockerjock79, Dec 16, 2024

I am seriously overwhelmed and scared. I just found out online that Cymbalta (brand name from Eli Lilly) is being discontinued worldwide. I called Eli Lilly customer service and they stated that it is discontinued. Whatever allotment is left with be distributed and that is it. I have tried the generic versions of Cymbalta along with other medications, such as Fetzima, Zoloft, Trintellix, Pristiq, Wellbutrin…none of them helped at all. I actually went into withdrawal in 2014 and 2016 when my health insurance wouldn’t cover the brand name Cymbalta, while having to take the generic duloxetine. It does not work the same, especially if you’ve been on the brand name first. I’ve contacted the FDA many times, and they could care less. There’s many articles out there that stated how many people have had issues with the generic version of Cymbalta. I currently Called the FDA to see if they could reach out to Eli Lilly for those of us who currently take Cymbalta. I have been on it now for almost 18 years, even emailing the CEO with no response from the company. Obviously they don’t care. They made their money over the last 20 off of the medication and now they have new medication to make more money off of. I literally have been getting severe panic attacks over this and I know when I’m not on the brand name, I will end up in the hospital or dead, and nobody is listening! What more can I do to change this? I feel like I’m planning my own funeral in my head, and none of these corporate people that make these decision could care less. The only med that works for me is being discontinued and I feel like my days are numbered. Never been this scared in my life.

Every body handles every drug differently. I have never had balance issues and I exercise vigorously 6-7 days a week. I used to jog but now I walk very fast. I alternate walking and water walking during the Summer. I am 74 and my PCP thinks I am in excellent shape and she is the one I listen to.
Ironically her practice is almost entirely seniors. I also don’t drink or smoke.
I prefer listening to someone with an MD next to her name rather than someone that gets their advice from Dr Google.
If you haven’t looked at the side effects on almost all medications “ May cause dizziness “ is probably one of the side effects.
I am amazed at how many ads list “ May cause death” and yet people take the medication.
Good luck to everyone out there. Rely on your doctor and not some random stranger.

You could probably make the same comment about PCPs as you do about drugs. Some are better than others. There are plenty of anecdotes here about PCPs ignoring what their patient had/s to say.

You are exactly right. That is why when I moved across town to be closer to my three beautiful granddaughters I kept my PCP and my Dermatologist. With traffic it can be a 45 to an hour but that is how much I value my 19 year relationship with both.
My PCP knows everything about me and it is like going to see a friend when I go to her office.
That is not the case with many PCP’s and Doctors these days.
I hope everyone on this site finds someone like my doctor.

That's how I feel bout my endocrinologist at Mayo. She is a wonderful lady who cares more about the welfare of her patients than any other doctor that I have intereacted with.

If you find a good one don’t let them get away. There are too many that just follow the book because they don’t take the time to really know their patients. Medicine is a science but it is not written in stone.
I am happy for you

I just found out as well. I have tried the generic when it first came out and it did not work for me. I am so scared as well. I just received the generic in the mail. I have a couple weeks of Cymbalta left. I am currently a caregiver for my 89 year old mom and have been for 25 years now. It already is mega stressful. I cannot image what life will be like if this generic does not work!

Almost if not all SSRI’s have gone generic and yes they do work. The added benefit is that they are far more affordable. Patents run out and big pharma has no choice and has to offer a generic version or let another company take over that market.
Maybe I am missing something but all my antidepressants are generic and so much more affordable. This is a good thing at least for me.
Good luck to everyone out there.

Not all generics work as well as the brand name. There have been many articles about generic antidepressants, not working as well as the brand name. I have dealt with this same scenario with Cymbalta. The generic version does not come close to the brand name of efficacy. Many forums out there with patients who say the same exact thing. https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2017-06-26/what-you-don-t-know-about-generic-drugs-and-how-it-can-hurt-you

@rockerjock79…I saw this post last month, but I couldn’t remember your name to reach out to you.
You’re the reason I found out about this situation and I appreciate you. My reaction to the generic was identical to yours. I have posted about this very topic on any site I can find. There are others in the same situation who need to know if anyone takes a generic brand that comes close to C. I guess this is a “taboo” question to ask on some sites. I can’t get anyone to give any of their experiences.
I began bead counting with C about a month ago and it’s been going well. I have about a one month supply left of name brand C and I’m starting to panic. HAVE YOU SWITCHED TO GENERIC? Please let me know how you’re doing because I know the hell that goes along with taking generic C.

Does this mean that people who’ve taken it have been exposed to this impurity the whole time? I’ve been taking this medication for almost 18 years. To know that it can cause cancer on top of discontinuing it is a double whammy if that’s the case. I did read about this, but I thought it was one of the generic medication’s that it was affecting not the entire brand name and all generics. I wonder if this means that they’ll be discontinuing this medication altogether? If anybody has any more info, please relay, I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you so much.

I am a bit lagged in responding to your post- but do you mind if I ask what dosage you were on? 18 years is quite a long time, just want to inquire regarding your plan for cessation.

Genuinely hope you're doing well.

I am so sorry you need to bead count. Have you reached out to any local pharmacies to see if there is a "compounding" pharmacy that would be able to produce a lower dosage for you? (I am not sure where you are located)

The switch to generic is difficult, and the wean/cessation is even more so, but it is worth it in the end. This medication should never have been approved by the FDA from the start.
