In praise of Orgovyx

Posted by northoftheborder @northoftheborder, Oct 7, 2024

I'm hardly an old vet here (my stage-4 prostate cancer was diagnosed just 3 years ago), but I've seen big changes in treatment even over that short time.

In my opinion, the biggest improvement has been Orgovyx. Getting a Firmagon injection was like having the flu, a stomach rash, and a fist-sized swollen reaction to a wasp bite ... Every. Single. Month.

The past six months on Orgovyx — just another daily pill — have been like night and day for my quality of life. I find it puzzling when I read people posting about how "awful" Orgovyx is, and then I remember that they're not comparing it to Firmagon but to life before ADT.

So maybe I am an old vet after all, since I'm comparing things to the bad old days (uphill in the snow both ways and all that). 😉

@northoftheborder Thank you for sharing your opinion and experience with Orgovyx.

My RO initially was going to give me the injection that is good for 4 months. I said I was very concerned about its side effects.

She then prescribed Orgovyx for me, that I would have been taking for two weeks already by the time of my first SBRT treatment this April 9.

I wish you the best!

Thank you and the best to you as well.

I am off Orgovyx at the moment, and my MO says at the latest conferences, there is more talk of 'intermittent dosing' rather than constant use. I gather I was early doing the 'holidays' based on the clinical trial data I read, which never formally endorsed sporadic use. I'm having another PSA test tomorrow; so we'll see. The plan is to stay off if PSA stays below 4 for instance. Also I'm 81 now; so QOL is a focus.

I have Gleason 9 and my Orgovyx treatment will be limited to 6 mo due to my Aptera AI intermediate score

I have no other ADT treatment to compare it to but so far into my 3rd month on Orgovyx, my side effects have been minimal🤞.
Some hot flashes but totally tolerable. Some blood work a bit awry but not overly so. Have consult in 2 days and praying they don’t take me off of it!

Tell me about your blood work? Elevated hypertension? Blood Sugar Spike? Why might they consider taking you off? Seems like you're tolerating it well, and hopefully your Cancer is receding? I start 6 months of ADT with Orgovyx this week. I'm a bit nervous but I do work out a lot. Praying!

Bloodwork issues were mostly elevated liver enzymes so alcohol must be used with caution, if at all.
BP, glucose levels excellent due to diet and exercise regimen. You should be OK

I was on Orgovyx for 2 1/2 years-- 2 years after surgery and radiation. I just came off of it a month ago at the DRs recommendation. I can't tell any difference in how I feel yet. My main issues with Orgovyx were tiredness, muscle weakness, and sleeplessness.

Has anybody heard that Orgovyx can reduce kidney function? I've had reduced function for quite a few years but it seems to have started to decline faster while on Orgovyx.

I know ADT can cause problems but I'd rather suffer that than my cancer spread. But we'll see. I'm doing what the Drs say.

What do you mean by reduced kidney function? Was it just in a blood test result? I have had blood test monthly for the last eight years, One of the test is for kidney function. It’s never been anything but normal.

I know a lot of people on Orgovyx over at ancan.org and nobody has ever mentioned anything like that.

There are all these obscure problems that some people have. Not a “fun” drug.

Ive read somewhere that when taking Orgovyx you really need to stay hydrated. Dehydration is bad for kidneys.

High blood pressure meds are notorious for affecting kidney function.
I am on my third medication - at MY request - since I noticed my gfr (glomerular filtration rate) dropping every 6 months. My doctor was ‘not concerned’ - but I certainly was.
The function improved greatly after getting off the first two; now on Norvasc…we’ll see.

I take Diltiazem, Losartan and Metoprolol twice a day for high blood pressure (Due to Zytiga). All my blood tests are normal and really don’t change from month to month. Been on them for over 4 years.

I guess the right drugs make a difference. The question is what are the right drugs, it must vary depending on a person’s medical makeup.

Hey Jeff, Losartan really hit my gfr - lowered it more than 30 pts in less than a year and was trending lower when I stopped it.
Good that it hasn’t affected you; my friend is almost on dialysis because of it.
