Tymlos causing belly fat?

Posted by kaa1 @kaa1, Jun 3, 2024

I’m on Tymlos for about 2 1/2 months now. I’m not usually concerned about my weight. I stay pretty stable. I’ve noticed that my belly seems to be getting fatter. Has anyone experienced this belly fat situation from Tymlos? Is there anything I can do about it? Why is it happening? Thanks for any input.

I have had any stomach issues before I went on TYmlos. I thought is was GERD but indeed it was not. I had share stomach pain , belched all day, could eat much, woke up at night with stomach pain but no reflux. Aftre months of researach it was discouvered that the PTH hormone was somehow mucking up the pancreatic islets so the enzymes couldnt get to the stomach. The fis was a simple digestive enzyme before meals. Amazing.
If you truly have GERD work with an alternative doc/ preferabley ayurvedic who is knolwedgeable about liver/gallbladder/pancreaes issues. Eastern medicine sees dogestive issues from that lens . I hope this helps. Sending postive energy and strength

I have been on Tymlos for a year and yes my stomach is larger, but I also have a large hernia , so I blamed that. You may be onto something!!

I gained weight/belly fat with Tymlos/Evenity. Just losing it a year later 😳.

I injected Tymlos in abdomen and rotated to thighs. My doc told me the belly is recommended only because of helping with pain and the ability to see easily where to “grab” to inject. I didn’t want to have scars, so I rotated outer thighs into the mix.

Unfortunately, many of us seem to suffer the GERD monster! Once I started losing weight/belly fat, the symptoms subsided, so there’s that to look forward to.

Peace, all! Cheers!

Thanks for the encouragement! Did injecting on the thighs help or is there a metabolic reason we gain weight, specifically in the abdomen?

I’m going to trying increasing my aerobic activity. I strength train 3 times a week so just need to add aerobics back into the mix.

Best wishes!

Is it ok and just as effective to inject in the thigh area? Did it eventually help your abdomen area to get less “puffy”? I might want to try it. I hate having to get bigger size pants bc of my waist!

jennirdh,

My previous rheumatologist told me that Tymlos could be injected pretty much anywhere - even in one's arm - but it's pretty to inject oneself in the back of the upper arm. He told me to inject anywhere that made it easy, which is thigh, abdomen, etc.

When I was prescribed Evenity, the nurses always injected in the back of my upper arms which seemed, for some strange reason, "normal" :).

As far as the belly fat is concerned, I feel like I'm now starting to lose some of the jelly roll, and although I have a puffy abdomen, that extra "flab" has begun to disappear. I'm about a year post-Evenity. I've also begun to lose weight overall and eat more sensibly.

Be patient, it might take awhile, but there's hope. I think my old jeans are just around the corner waiting for me. Wishing you the best. Cheers!

My stomach issues got so bad that I, at one point, thought I was having heart issues. I visited my cardiologist who ordered an echocardiogram . . . nothing wrong with my heart. A PA in the doc's office ordered up some Omeprazole and (I think it was called) Carafate, which fixed me up pretty quickly. In a subsequent scope of my upper GI, no hernia was found (although one doc described it as a possible sliding hernia which he couldn't see at the time of the endoscopy).

Since starting to eat better/less and lose some weight, I've been saving money by not using Tums and I haven't taken an Omeprazole in months.

However, dmshope, your post is very interesting . . . I'm due to have a PTH lab done in October, so I'll see how that looks. Thanks for your post!

Cheers!

Thanks for your insight. Reading these notes is helpful, but a little depressing especially to people who care about staying healthy and strong. I am 70 and been challenging myself to keep moving. None of that has changed, but now with the rolls around my belly, I have decided to invest in SPANX.!! Never have I felt so rolly polly as now. It doesn't sound like quitting Tymlos is the way to go either. Does anyone have any knowledge of what happens to the belly fat once you are off of the drug? That would be good to know. Does the fat go away?

I also got a big belly after 4 months on Tymlos. I couldn't stand it anymore, I have been off it since July14, 2025 My belly is still huge. It makes my posture slump forward. I am going to investigate Reclast, I don't know if I can get my pre-Tymlos belly back. I also am 70. Thank you all, for all your information .

Loss of estrogen during menopause also leads to belly fat.

Cardio burns out the adrenals and raises cortisol. I would stick with the weight training just go heavier.
