Scar tissue after knee replacement

Posted by leithlane @leithlane, Jan 31, 2017

I had knee replacement surgery 6 weeks ago . Through PT I have been working on breaking up the scar tissue only for it to regrow by the time I get back to PT two days later. I have been massaging at home, using a hand held massager and roller. It is painful and swollen. I am getting very disheartened. Any suggestions as to what else I can do. Has anyone had laser treatments to break up scar tissue? Were they effective?

Sorry for your trouble. They do not do a standard MRI on any metal joint. They have a modified procedure. Check with your physician on what his care plan will be. Stiffening up is not a good answer. Interferential Electrical Current with heat and and some deep massage will help.along with contact, relax,stretch and repeat and recombant bike for 5-ten minutes to tolerance. It is old fashion, but it is comfortable and pain relieving.(Cross he knee with a modulated surge.) If they won't do it, go some place that will.

That is good to know. I actually have two people that have reported to me that they had MRIs and their knee following a TKR that went poorly

I said I would report back after my experience in my elusive search to End this scar tissue pain (see prior threads)... Underwent ablation of genicular nerves of knee last week, so far, no relief, want to beleive that it will still "kick in"... Anxiety and never ending pain prevails, I was informed that many patients find relief after 2 weeks, time appears to going backwards...

Abatment after two weeks is unusual. The regular home health followm up from the hospital is more nomal. After 6 weeks and continuous machine at home, out patient PT can use, interferential current under heat, deeo massage. and contract, relax stretch techniques, recumbant bike, treadmill, upper trunk strengthening and treadmill and core exercise. Some people do better in the pool with float devices and progressive weight, and laps, etc to get ready along with the ES, hear, deep massage. to prepare for the gym.At two weeks, you are are much to early for shots(as a Retired PT, that is my opinion) Gentle considerate comprehensive manual work is the norm. Are you on a home motorized unit? Stick with that first. How old are you?. Did you do exercise before surgery.? Two weeks and some pain is normal. Usually the progressive program and the normal early limited use of opiate s pills are the norm.Something does not sound right???

@damewocane I hope you will have improvement by the end of the two weeks. “Never ending pain” is tough to deal with.
Please let us know how you are doing next week.

It has been 2 weeks since the ablation-Sadly/no relief Iam awakened numerous times nightly by stabbing pain around the knee and there are tiny gray scars where the instruments were applied that appear to lightly protrude so that when i run my hand over my knee I feel these tiny bumps-Oh how I wish it had worked! Don't know if perhaps it still might "take" will throw another $hundred away on Friday to ask the PA-Doesn't look good from here: {

@damewocane Good evening, I can feel your disappointment that you are waking up to the same pain after your ablation. Ya, know....some things work for others that don't necessarily work for us. I even smiled at your positive anticipation....just give it some time, maybe something didn't work right, I wonder if anyone else found relief this far out on the calendar.

It is so discouraging when we look for a snippet of joy in our daily journey only to have it disappear with the pain. And so I will just mention ever so lightly that the only thing that works for me day after day, and now, year after year, is medical cannabis. It takes time and patience. It doesn't have side effects, enables custom dosing, has many choices and isn't addicting. Have you or would you ever try it? What would you give the biggest cheer for to be pain-free? Be content and at ease tonight. Chris

Oh, @damewocane I am so sorry that things have not improved. I can imagine how discouraged you must be. I hope something positive will come out of your appointment on Friday.

Steroids, 6day blister pack-Felt major relief. All is temporary. Advised it will be 6 weeks before I know if knee ablation worked. 3 weeks and counting.

Hi @bill54321,

Are you wondering about Pollyanna? I thought I’d chime in with an explanation:“Pollysnna” is often used to describe a person who has irrepressible optimism and a tendency to find good in everything–an internal optimist in the face of adversity:)
