Anyone else on Flecainide and taking famotidine/Pepcid for GERD?

Posted by domiha @domiha, Dec 21, 2024

I have had GERD for years, and took PPIs. Five years ago, after a negative reaction to the long-term PPI use, the gastro doc took me off PPIs and switched me to Pepcid. That has worked. Well, in July I was put on Flecainide after an episode of paroxysmal AFib showed up on a monitor. Recently I have read that it can be dangerous to take famotidine if taking Flecainide as it can cause life-threatening arythmia in some cases. I will discuss with my cardio when I see him at my next appointment... but I'm just wondering if there is anyone else here on Flecainide that also takes Pepcid (famotidine) to control GERD??? If so, has your doctor commented on it? I cannot go back to the PPIs... and if I stop the Pepcid, the GERD will be much worse. 🙁 Best wishes to all... and Happy Holidays! Mike

Dear Gloaming, Happy new year. I’m very interested in your comments about taking ACV. I’m a happy-to-be-alive, 2+year pacemaker person on Eliquis and low dose Famotodine twice a day for silent reflux and (very infrequent) paroxysmal AF. I also have a small hiatal hernia, so am wondering if you know whether the valve you’ve mentioned still works to protect the esophagus in that case?

I don't have any experience or expertise in the matter of hiatal hernias. My dad had a fundo/whatever-it-was wrap procedure four years ago because of a hiatal hernia, and he feels it was either botched or a waste of time and resources. The pyloric valve is atop the stomach and may, but probably not, protrude through the diaphragm like the hiatal hernia. does. Again, I don't know. But the point is, if it IS the pyloric valve that is not functioning well and you have GERD, it might be worth running ACV past your care provider and seeking his/her concurrence to try it for a week or more.

My husband was prescribed Pepcid 40mg for acid reflux exacerbations. Because of his age (82) it is a high risk to perform any invasive procedure due to his heart failure and cardiac Amyloidosis. He has been taking Nexium for quite a while and it also has been working well. After starting Pepcid before bedtime he started to get urinary issues. At his fourth day of taking Pepcid he developed urinary retention which he suffered from it years ago. He was self-cathing for a while but the retention stopped. He went to the ER yesterday because of retaining urine (he takes diuretics). Everything was fine, the labs normal but now he is self cathing again. He decided to stop Pepcid after he found out it causes urinary retention especially in the elderly. He wants to see if Pepcid was the cause or not. Has anyone heard or has experienced issues with Pepcid regarding urinary retention?

I have been taking 40mg pepcid daily for 15 years. Never had urimary retention.
Is your husband's prostate enlarged? Could be other factors.
Maybe just some gaviscon at bedtime instead of pepcid. If he should stay with Nexium if that works for him.
Hope he feels better
Marie

My husband had his prostate radiated on 2009. Today he voided without catheter but I am keeping an eye on it. In his case I think it was Pepcid because that was the new medication added to his regular medication regimen. Every person is different and acts differently to new meds. Maybe is not Pepcid but everything else has come up normal. He will keep his Nexium. Thanks for responding to my message. Stay well.
