Rare serious side effect of Eliquis: Muscle weakness
In late July 2017 I was admitted for very high heart rate and Afib. Had been, and still am, on minimal meds. Hospitalist put me on Eliquis, 5mg 2X/day.
Within a month my leg muscles were weakening to the point where I could no longer play Pickleball or walk golf. Within a few weeks my Cardiologist did an ablation and inserted a loop recorder. For the next 2-1/2 years the loop recorder saw MINIMAL Afib, under 0.5%; the ablation did its job.
By November 2017 I needed a walker. By December 2017 I needed to be wheelchair pushed through an Ice Sculpture display as there was no way I could walk the 25-30 minutes of the exhibit.
When I finally got to see a Neurologist at Shands (Univ of FL, Gainesville) in July 2018, he ran an extensive battery of blood work tests but could find nothing to explain the muscle weakness.
Has anyone else encountered similar muscle effects following being prescribed Eliquis?

Can I ask if you have pain or weakness? I hip pain, upper thigh pain, and pain that radiates back into my upper legs. It’s a 8 on the pain scale. Thank you!
Your response sounds like those who had immediate problems after the vax and died or almost died.
EXACTLY why I use natural solutions. I could write a book.
The docs will not tell you bad side effects. YOU need to investigate, i.e. google the side effects of any drug they prescribe before you bother to fill the prescription or swallow it. MOST or ALL drugs have side effects.
When my husband and I stated Atorvastatin , we had weakened legs with a variety of pains. We started taking COQ10 and leg pains stopped. My husband has been on Eliquis for about a year with no leg pains (yet?) May be the COQ10?
I have been on Eliquis since the pandemic in 2001. The past year has been a nightmare for me because my legs have been weak and numb. I have arthritis in my back and was being treated with steroid injections in my back. I was diagnosed with lumbar spinal stenosis and the spine doctor told me that was causing the numbness and weakness in my legs. The spine doctor had a nerve test run and the doctor who did the nerve test told me to make and appointment to see the spine ASAP. The spine doctor then told me everything was normal and the numbness was from the spine. Now I read this for the first time. It's amazing that with all the doctors I have seen and complained too who know I take Eliquis never once suggested this could be the cause of my leg numbness and muscle weakness.

1 ReactionI am taking two meds one is 5mg Eliquis and the other was blood pressure med Metoprolol. I have severe joint/muscle/bone pain. I went off of Metoprolol as I researched that could be causing my issues, but I still have joint and muscle pain. Reading your story I will discuss with my doctor that it could also be the Eliquis. I do have a history of fibromyalgia, but this pain is different. I have gone from working out at our exercise room at our clubhouse (in just 4 months of taking these meds) to now needing an upright walker just to walk 1,000 steps outside. This is insane. I have also followed a whole foods plant based diet for the past 16 years so my diet is good.

3 ReactionsThe side effects of Eliquis gave me major health issues and anxiety!
I’m now on warfarin and Carvendolo. I had Afib maybe once a year for about 6-8 years while on Diltalizan. I always refuse Eliquis and was never offered any other solutions.
In March I finally saw a cardiologist after an Afib event, 4 months before. Yes it took that long to get an appt.
I started on Eliquis and within a day I was really sick. Headache. Phlegm so thick I couldn’t breath, lethargic, sinus issues, confused/dementia like, major fatigue, body aches, headache and with 6-8 hours Afib. I had to be cardioaverted.
I told the new cardiologist it was the Eliquis. I was told I was wrong it’s a virus. After about 2 weeks on Eliquis I got the “I can’t live like this” thought and it scared me. I threw the Eliquis away. (Got a new cardiologist too). By the next day I was feeling better. It took a month for most of the bad reactions to fade. It’s been 5 months and the massive stomach and chest pain bloating which proceeds my Afib events is now finally starting to be controllable and fading with Pepcid, gas x and a very modified diet. Doctors are insensitive, “it’s not triggering your Afib, here’s a ppi med” (I turned bright red) or it’s IBS.
I’m on my own to figure this out . Limited diet, a food or additive triggers the chest bloating that triggers the Afib
I’ve also had 5 Afib events too, but now they are getting further apart. Not as intense and auto correct in an hour.
I wish they’d realize Eliquis isn’t the one size fits all blood thinner.
Diltalizan for years, I gained weight and ankles would get swollen at times
Metoprolol (2 months) was ok? I ran slow and didn’t want to do much and didn’t sleep more than 5 hours.
Carvendolo seems to be ok. so far it’s been 2weeks and I’m sleeping more and more active.
Hope you feel better.
I feel it’s a vagus nerve issue now. A Brain to heart to gut disease, so I’m doing Vagal massage, and acupuncture, tapping, and breathing to help with it.
