Tymlos causing belly fat?

Posted by kaa1 @kaa1, Jun 3, 2024

I’m on Tymlos for about 2 1/2 months now. I’m not usually concerned about my weight. I stay pretty stable. I’ve noticed that my belly seems to be getting fatter. Has anyone experienced this belly fat situation from Tymlos? Is there anything I can do about it? Why is it happening? Thanks for any input.

I have been on Tymlos three months and I noticed the same belly fat issue you described.
I’m stressed enough by several other side effects now and don’t want to deal with dieting on top of them. Unless it becomes a noticeable problem, I just try to eat healthy and wear more elastic waist or no waist clothing.
(I’m 73 years old and no one is looking that closely 😉).

I found this somewhere…and had an appt with a specialist pharmacist in endocrinology (because I was aggravating my endocrinologist with questions he couldn’t answer) and discussed what I had found and he agreed that TYmLoS can do this as it affects the parathyroid. My endocrinologist insisted that it wasn’t in the list of side effects. I call “BS”!
“ Tymlos and fat gain

The literature of experience with parathyroid treatment is replete with abdominal thickening. Enough of that literature had reached scientists that they determined that high levels of calcium in the blood prevents fat cell apoptosis, even in individuals who have never taken drugs that work specifically by increasing serum levels of calcium through the administration of parathyroid hormone. Abdominal fat is also a feature of parathyroid diseases that increase serum calcium.

The statement regarding Tymlos (abaloparatide) and its association with fat gain can be examined through existing literature on parathyroid hormone (PTH) treatments and their effects on body composition, particularly abdominal fat.

Background on Tymlos and PTH

Tymlos is a synthetic analog of parathyroid hormone (PTH) used primarily to treat osteoporosis in postmenopausal women. PTH promotes bone formation but can also have metabolic effects, including influencing fat metabolism.”

So it definitely sounds like TYmLoS is causing f the abdominal fat. I’m now wondering if injecting in the thigh makes a difference? I didn’t even know I could do that. I will
Start taking L-Carnitine as a fat metabolizer and boot it helps. I eat a clean diet and exercise but I am starting to look like a bloated spongebob. I am not happy.

Has the L-Carnitine helped?

I sure hope so! I’m experiencing the same thing with teraparatide (a Forteo bio similar drug). I’m also 5’2” and my ideal weight is 115 lbs. I’ve gained quite the little gut.

Hello! I was wondering if you might elaborate on the dental? I have horrible dental pain which I have tied to the Tymlos. But I am in the beginning stages of the meds. I seem to be adjusting now but everytime I start the meds (2 times) and then everytime I up the dose 2 clicks, 4, 6, and then to 8 clicks I got HORRIBLE pain on my right dental side from below my sinus to my teeth. It was kinda like having a migraine along my nerve route. It was unbelievably painful a couple times. This last time I predicted it would come and adjusted a bit. Seems to last several days and then subsides. I can't figure it out, but know it aligns with the medication. There is a condition Trigeminal Neuralgia - that is what i get. The nerves just create so much havoc in my jaw along the 3 nerve routes. I paid to go to the dentist in the beginning of the meds and they found nothing. At that time I didn't have a clue it could be the medication! Anyone else?

I ended up having a crack in my tooth, which was not detected by x-rays. When my tooth finally broke all my pain stopped. I do not think the TYMLOS caused my pain. It was just a coincidence that my tooth was cracking during the time I was starting the medicine. Please check with your dentist.

I have been taking tymlos for 18 months now and it has also caused me belly fat. I do not like it at all, but I am trying to maintain a positive attitude and hoping for good results. The day I will no longer have to inject myself with this drug will be a happy day indeed and I will celebrate!!

I’ve been on Tymlos about 4 months. I have visibly gained abdominal fat but only 3 pounds. I’m begging to look like a barrel! I’m 5’7, 143 pounds.

I also have GERD and hiatal hernia so it is important not to have this excess fat around my waist putting pressure on my stomach.

How do we prevent this weight gain?

@sharonmitch, I have the same problem only with more added weight. I've gained 15 pounds and have a fat roll since being on Tymlos and Forteo for a year and a half. I think trying to get my calcium from food has also added to the weight. When I sit with my legs up, it pushes on my abdomen making my bile reflux and GERD worse. I used to be underweight and never had to worry about weight before. None of my clothes fit around the waist. I might try giving myself my shot in my thigh.

I gained weight/belly fat with Tymlos/Evenity. Just losing it a year later 😳.

I injected Tymlos in abdomen and rotated to thighs. My doc told me the belly is recommended only because of helping with pain and the ability to see easily where to “grab” to inject. I didn’t want to have scars, so I rotated outer thighs into the mix.

Unfortunately, many of us seem to suffer the GERD monster! Once I started losing weight/belly fat, the symptoms subsided, so there’s that to look forward to.

Peace, all! Cheers!

I have had any stomach issues before I went on TYmlos. I thought is was GERD but indeed it was not. I had share stomach pain , belched all day, could eat much, woke up at night with stomach pain but no reflux. Aftre months of researach it was discouvered that the PTH hormone was somehow mucking up the pancreatic islets so the enzymes couldnt get to the stomach. The fis was a simple digestive enzyme before meals. Amazing.
If you truly have GERD work with an alternative doc/ preferabley ayurvedic who is knolwedgeable about liver/gallbladder/pancreaes issues. Eastern medicine sees dogestive issues from that lens . I hope this helps. Sending postive energy and strength
