Posted by baz @baz, Jul 5, 2022

I need to finally address my rectal prolapse. What are my options? Anyone else with this problem?
Thank you.

Hi, @lucifer179 - tagging a few members to see if anyone may have had a ventral mesh rectopexy and how it went @researchmaven @kilh @terrirussell @tabithatwitch @baz @peanutbutterhair. @guener also may have some thoughts for you.

lucifer179 - have you decided on whether you'd like to have this surgery?

Yes I had the surgery 2 weeks ago and so far very successful. I had very little pain and stayed 2 days in the hospital. Care was fantastic and so far so good.
If anyone wants any feedback do not hesitate to ask me.

My experience with surgery is that you cannot be too diligent about choosing your surgeon. Get as many references as possible. God bless.

I so agree!! In 2015 I went in for the big Pelvic Floor surgery…the female bladder and rectal and he cut my colon and could not fix it. They called in another surgeon he’s was in there struggling and they called in a Gastroenterologist and he saved my life put in a stoma bag and 4 1/2 months later he was able to do a reversal. I thought I was being careful too.

Could I ask what state you live in and what kind of doctor did your surgery? I’ve heard the Robotic is an easier recovery.

I am 70 year female with rectal prolapse. I would be interested in other people's experience with a surgical procedure for this condition. Also I was advised to have biofeedback for pelvic floor dysynergia. Does anyone have experience with this Thanks.

Do not underestimate the value of the chair that is being promoted everywhere for both bladder and bowel prolapse for men and women. I have gone to a prolapse physio and used the chair (in Canada I went to Urospot). Worked for me.

Just looked it up! Wonderful news. Hope Medicare will pay for it. Again thank you for bringing it to our attention.

Google UROSPOT. It is a company in Canada but wherever you are from there are other countries that offer the same treatment. The advertising mainly discusses bladder but it is also used for bowel prolapse.

@swilkins1974 and @adlttl123 - Here is something you may want to check out: a Russian and Czech research study published in the journal Urogynecology which assesses the use of high-intensity focused electromagnetic (HIFEM) therapy and electrostimulation, the type of technology used by UROSPOT:

A Comparative Study on the Effects of High-Intensity Focused Electromagnetic Technology and Electrostimulation for the Treatment of Pelvic Floor Muscles and Urinary Incontinence in Parous Women: Analysis of Posttreatment Data https://journals.lww.com/fpmrs/fulltext/2021/04000/a_comparative_study_on_the_effects_of.11.aspx

Please note that this study's main aim appears to be addressing urinary incontinence, rather than rectal prolapse, per se. However, pelvic floor muscles, also discussed in this study, do impact rectal prolapse. At this time, it does not appear that a formal study of high-intensity focused electromagnetic (HIFEM) therapy and electrostimulation specifically for patients with rectal prolapse has yet been conducted.

I’m in the US. I will just have to check it out. The good news is that they have come up with new non-invasive treatments. God’s speed. Diane.

That study is 4 years old. It worked for me. Initially when it came out it in 2019 it had poor reviews but it has now been improved.
