Does anyone feel old and useless with age?

Posted by sally12345 @sally12345, Sep 13, 2023

Hi, I'm almost 64.. I'm feeling old and useless. My strength isn't good anymore. Like it used to be mainly side effects of meds. My health is poor with cvsd. Osteoporosis, poor circulation, hearing , eyesight, you name it's going. I always took care of myself. Now I've gotten older and everything's wrong, my grandkids don't a want me around and they are little still. No friends to talk with or do things with. Why is it we spend our lifetime taking care of family. Loving friends to end up , old and tired. Useless.

I am dealing with this daily at 71. After two years of constant medical problems I am very limited. I am working with a pschiatrist for meds and with a therapist; but, so far I still have suicidal ideation daily. I am tired of being so limited; but, I keep plugging along hoping it will get better.

I am in a similar situation as you. The last two years have been terrible. I am now 78 and this has been the worst year of my life. I went off my antidepressant after 45 years (Effexor). I don’t even know what possessed me to do it. After numerous attempts to reinstate the Effexor (at least 4 times), I and my short-term therapists gave up. Every day is a struggle for me. I have aged terribly in these two years (wrinkled skin, hair loss). I lost 55 pounds in a matter of 3 months. My doctor described me as malnourished. I think I look like a monster. My best feature was always my curly strawberry blonde hair. It’s mostly gone now and I have resorted to wearing baseball caps. Sometimes I feel as if I can’t go on but I try because of financial reasons.

Tell me about it--74 and have same issues--although grandkids who live near me are adults they are same and my adult kids ? ppphhffft
Friends from long ago either deceased or 1/2 a couple & seem afraid to do anything without their "other"

I find gardening helps --a pet if you like an animal & dont travel much--and the old adage--volunteer where there are chatty people.
No one knows you are alone --its hard to start but only cure is to make yourself go where people are --talk to strangers ( in safe places)
Good Luck xxx
i'm in australia-same worldwide

Have crap health & pet dander is an issue too but recently decided to hell with it & got a few fish in small heated tank and started volunteering a few hours once a week at a foodbank--all of us are crocks health wise & doing it for same reasons---improving mental health.

Was lucky i think as I chased Drs in 2016&17 until they sent me to melb for tests & then of course they found cysts in pancreas & Alfred Hospital removed them & spleen in oct 2022.
Shit health since & now lung disease grrrrrr
Better than alternative tho

Hi there
You are NOT "useless" --anyone who isn't lying flat on a bed unable to do anything fir themselves has at least one thing they can share with another --which will help self talk.
I am in same boat--moved to a rental 135 km from city i lived in to use public transport so i can talk to strangers instead of no one --how desperate is that ??
Anyone that sits next to me is going to be talked to as i have no family that aren't "busy"

please please go to a community house ( thats what we call them in australia )
You are saying what at least 50% of over 60's say--ppl don't seem to live as long or are falling apart 5 minutes after we hit 70--nor value their friendships. It is sooo annoying isn't it ??
xxxx feel free to reply & sook i do it A LOT xxx

With out or little pets like dog, cat. bird or even a fish to help us as a companion yes it can be very lonely. with out our little friends make it worse. we would be lost without them sometime & our little dog we are sure he know what going on just by the way he behaves now and the way he looks at us, I'm 100% sure he know I got Cancer or something that I never had before just by the way he act is unbelievable.
