Any luck using Tylenol and ibuprofen for joint pain?

Posted by lindaadele @lindaadele, Jun 27 11:16am

When I saw my rheumatologist she was ready to give me another medication for PMR. Not one medication has worked for me and I’m really afraid to try any new medication’s. I was wondering if any of you had any luck with these over-the-counter painkillers for their PMR? any information you can give me would be very very helpful! Thank you !

All of these medication‘s can be very dangerous if you do not follow the instructions specifically!!! I found that doing my research Tylenol was the safest one but with Tylenol also you must not go over certain number of milligrams per day or it can affect your liver and other situation’s can come about. Wishing you the very very best going forward!!!With medication you’re better off being safe than sorry!!!

After about 10 days of ibuprofen per bottle instructions, I developed painless, massive bleeding from the small intestines. Special colonoscopy showed terminal ileum ulcers. I received six units of blood and was in the intensive care unit for almost 3 days.

I have been taking Tylenol 3 for years and it does help. But don’t take more than 2 a day. I hope you find this helpful.

Tylenol is pretty much fine for everything drunk along with a lot of water. 25 years ago, the military ibuprofen me into the hospital because they wouldn’t put me on opioid. After the emergency room, nurse told me never to take ibuprofen on a regular basis. I didn’t. I only take it for emergencies like when I pull a muscle. The same with the prednisone only in emergencies When a three or four day protocol is required. For 30 years, I suffered with the agony of joint pain along with inflammation complaining to the doctors every year and every few years having RA tests only to come out negative. Finally after 30 years, somebody in the forum, recommend recommended tart cherry capsules (I purchased ZAZZEE on Amazon for $20) and in 24 hours my joint pain and inflammation was gone. Turns out I had gout, arthritis and none of the stupid doctors ever wanted to spend time thinking about how they might be able to help me. Because they saw so much OA in my x-rays, they just would tell me I have osteoarthritis and to go home and exercise (which I did already before I even got there). The insanity of a simple blood test for your uric acid to show that my uric acid level was high, which meant I had gout And how that simple test was overlooked for 30 years was absolutely crazy to me. I never trust the medical industry as many times I’ve been misdiagnosed and through my own advocacy and pursuit. I have to figure out how to best get treated. It’s too bad that it is this way, but it is at least for me.

Having high uric acid levels, also known as hyperuricemia, can lead to gout, but it doesn't automatically mean you have the condition. Gout develops when uric acid crystals accumulate in the joints, causing inflammation and pain.

I can sympathize with you. I was recently diagnosed with gout in 2024.
About 5 years ago, I passed a kidney stone composed mostly of uric acid. That was when my uric acid level was checked and it was high. My rheumatologist speculated that I might have gout but didn't test me for gout. A urologist treated multiple kidney stones in both kidneys. My urologist treated my uric acid level with allopurinol but it was stopped when my kidney stones shrunk.

A couple of years later my uric acid level was high again. My urologist wasn't too concerned because my kidney stones were not getting any larger.

At my next rheumatology visit, I mentioned that my uric acid level was high again and my feet hurt. My rheumatologist looked at my feet and said my feet looked like I had gout. That was when gout was diagnosed by a simple ultrasound of my big toes.

Prednisone is used for gout flares which might explain why I needed Prednisone for such a long time (12 years). However, if it isn't one thing it is another... or... as I like to say it is always a combination of many things.

Thanks for the tips! I have gout I had four gout flares, which sent me to the hospital in 2002. But nobody seemed to care. They called it pseudo gout, and they were supposed to go back and inject a needle in my joint and they never did. So I went on a low purine diet back then where I’ve stayed for 20 some odd years. But it wasn’t enough at 68 as I aged, I was getting more inflammatory reactions and more joint pains. It’s like my whole body felt like I had the flu. They never test my uric acid level and they should have because my dad had gout and my dad was on allopurinol for as long as I can remember, but I never knew that it was hereditary. I inherited the disease and it’s not gonna go away. It’s a disease And there’s no cure as far as I know there’s just avoiding the gout, flares by taking the medicine regularly and eating a low purine diet. I’m still very angry that I suffered and suffered and suffered for years and decades on end with inflammatory joint pain and the doctors didn’t do shit. I was going to renown doctors and seeing all the doctors they had for arthritis and no one ever mentioned gout. They’re just lazy. One of the problems is that they want your uric acid level to be out of range. So at some point one of the lazy doctors might’ve tested my uric acid level and because I was on a low purine diet. It wasn’t out of range. After I went on the tart cherry capsules and I felt 100% better. I demanded my doctor do the test and I was out of range so then after a couple months of being on the tart cherry capsules, I asked for the test again. This time I was within range, but I wasn’t at the middle so I demanded to go on the medicine. When I went on the medicine, my uric acid level got to exactly where it’s supposed to be and I felt a hell of a lot better. I’m just so angry about this whole thing to have suffered for so many years. I can’t tell you. Thanks for the tip about the vitamin C! When the crystals accumulate in your joints, I think it’s called toffi.

Tophi but close enough.

I didn't really ask for a test for gout. The ultrasound of my big toes was done on the spot and only took a couple of minutes. I think the ultrasound machine might have been a new toy that the rheumatologists got. Several rheumatologists were in my room to see what the ultrasound showed. Everyone was excited and tophi were easily seen. One comment was that the tophi were large so it was surprising that I didn't ever have a gout flare. My feet are mostly numb and I was on daily prednisone for 12 years so my feet never hurt that much. The conclusion was that gout was "contributing" to my systemic inflammation.

I don't have any genetic predisposition to gout. However , I have metabolic syndrome from long term Prednisone use. I also have a 25 year history of autoimmune rheumatic disease and I'm a male. I probably fit somewhere in the following group.

Before I took prednisone on a long term basis I was fit and trim but also much younger. I'm off Prednisone now so my feet are hurting more. PMR is being treated with a biologic which is targeted at PMR.

Prednisone is a "shotgun approach" to all kinds of inflammatory pain.

Does anyone have PMR type symptoms when the heat, humidity and dew point are high? I found that by taking 1 Tylenol for Arthritis helps me. Of note: I have no symptoms otherwise. I have been on Kevzara for 8 doses (16 weeks)
Thx
