My Husband Had RC on May 29th. For Stage 2 MIBC. Doing Well.
My husband had a RC with Prostate removal on May 29th. He is coming home tomorrow. He has JP drain on left side and Stoma or right side. He has got the hang of the urostomy bag somewhat. I have Protien Shakes, mashed potatoes , applesauce, soups…He wanted to know how to take a shower with the JP drain. Also, He will drink 3 liters of water a day to prevent UTI’s. Is there anything I missed? The surgeon said that 25% of patients wind up back in the hospital because of UTI’s etc. We are also waiting for the Pathology report. The surgeon said he took out all the lymph nodes and saw no spread of cancer. I also bought Ivory Soap to shower with. He is using Coloplast at the moment. If there is any tips you can give me on how to help my husband out I would greatly appreciate them. God bless you all xx

Turned out to be really easy. Mayo has excellent urostomy nurses who trained me on replacing the bags. Otherwise I made a full recovery. I just struggled with three AKIs and cellulitis due to chemotherapy. I tried a therapist once who turned out to be useless. And a dietician outside Mayo who was obsessed with protein. Then I finally met a Mayo dietician once who was obsessed with weight loss. I still have to meet with a geneticist at some point. But I had so many medical appointments over the past nine months I am happy to be in the monthly immunotherapy cadence. Weekly appointments gets to be a bit tiring after a while.

4 Reactions@rose1966 Thank you so much for this outline! We read it outloud at our family meeting yesterday and agreed that we would set up the second floor with a a mini fridge and microwave. We decided this was a good compromise - one floor up to the tub where Jeff can sit and shower - and one floor down to the backyard where we can walk and get fresh air and sunshine.
It's so nice that we have a month to prepare. Everyone volunteered for their tasks: set up grab bars, stock medical supplies, buy dry good groceries, start freezing soups! Your recommendation for the sheets is priceless - we will definitely get those for the beds and sofa.
We can't thank you enough for sharing this. Now we can prepare and not get overwhelmed. If the family is steady and strong, we can share that with Jeff so he can concentrate on healing. I hope we can all get physically stronger so we can be more loving and patient with each other. And your guidelines have definitely put us on the right path. Thank you so much for taking time out of your healing to start ours. Blessing to you and your husband.

2 Reactions@skybolt Im very glad your husband has almost completed the chemo! I remember my husband ringing the bell and all the nurses on the sides when he ran to ring it. It’s a great accomplishment. Some can’t do the full line of chemo.
My husband is back to normal…pretty much. A few weeks ago he had his JP Drain removed, had his Port removed and 1 stent in his stoma, also removed. He wears a 1 piece pouch by Coloplast…he just sticks it on and changes it every 2 days. I’ve been giving him organic protein shakes since he got home. Also, organic food with high protein content. Lentil soup for fiber etc. He likes to make his own salads with organic chicken & veggies. He drinks 2 liters of Mountain Valley water each day and he’s had no UTI’s. At night he uses the Convatec container which has a tube to attach to his pouch…I think that’s how he does it…and he bought a special wash for it. He’s always been extremely self sufficient and does it all himself. By the 2nd week home…he was taking walks with me around the block…mowing the lawn….but no lifting anything. He’s been on the go a lot and has now started jogging and bike riding again. Thank God…We gave God all the Glory and Praise for the doctor finding the bladder cancer before it left the muscle…if he waited any longer to go to the urologist…the cancer would have left the bladder. Praise the Lord it didn’t metastasize. Also,Everyday we pray for all His miracles and blessing. I’ve been praying for your husband that he is NED or Cured after these chemo treatments🙏🙏🙏🙏 He does remember to rest everyday…that’s needed. He’s going to go back to his desk job soon. I hope soon…I think I might be getting on his nerves. I’m too over protective. How are you? Are you feeling tired or worrying? When I was feeling that way, I quoted scripture. If you have any questions about anything, feel free to message me. I would love to talk. God bless you and may God put His Healing Hands on your dear husband 🙏IJN Amen🙏

2 ReactionsRose I am so happy to hear things are going well. This is so uplifting for my husband to hear. The chemo has his Red blood cells low so he is weak and dizzy which he is not use to being. I am getting so many good tips from you . Thank you and may God continue your healing and full recovery. ❤️

2 Reactions@skybolt My husbands RBC, Hemoglobin , Hematocrit….were all low …every week. The chemo doctor had to cut it down because it was too strong. Even though he drank 3 liters of water to get the Cisplatin and Gemcitabine out of his system…after the 4th treatment …it was too strong and the next 4 treatments were cut down a bit. Low RBC causes anemia, lack of oxygen to lungs…dizziness…My husband experienced that and told the doctor. Some even need transfusions. Once he’s done, his blood will all go back to normal in a couple of months. B 12 and red meat with orange juice helps absorb the iron. Spinach with orange juice is excellent also. Dwight’s doctor ordered a CT scan with contrast to see if the chemo killed it all. It did…but for my husband, the RC was 100% necessary because it was Stage 2 MIBC. Because the RC was robotic …he only has a few tiny cut scars. He would have done the neobladder…but hated the thought of catheterizing himself every night. The cystoscopy and when the urologist scraped out his bladder was worse than the RC because the catheter was so painful for him. My husband said your husband made it through the tough part & he’ll be just fine. God bless xx Photo is my husband and I out for dinner a week ago.

1 ReactionBeautiful !!! I will give my husband the message. He spoke with two men who had RCs . One had neo the other ileal conduit. In my opinion the ileal conduit has better outcomes, quicker recovery, less complications. God Bless the both of you.
