@brit Did the ENT give you a diagnosis? At times there have been meds prescribed that I felt were too expensive. What I have done is to call the doctor and explain the situation and asked him if there is another alternative med that would be less expensive. Try that approach and let us know what happens. Keep in touch @brit and let us know how you are doing. Teresa
Hi Patti,
Sorry to hear about the issues you are having with your tongue. I recommend that you start a new discussion in the Skin Health group here: https://connect.mayoclinic.org/group/skin-conditions/ That way the moderator @kanaazpereira can connect you with other members who may have had this issue.
Thank you so much for your "swifty" reply. I will contact the mayo clinic group and see what they say. Thanks again
Patti
A relative of mine was told she had thrush and was treated for over a year. She finally went to another doctor and was told it was cancer. Second opinions are always good. It could not hurt to try a second ENT and see what that doctor says.
I Agree, my tongue issue was not diagnosed and turned into cancer.

Hello Patti! Thank you for posting this question. This will help other members in the future who are here looking to connect regarding the topic oral thrush.
I spoke with one of our knowledgeable physicians in ENT about your thrush diagnosis. He suggested making a second opinion appointment with an oral dermatologist that specializes in oral thrush. They need to take cultures, diagnose and treat from there. He said most of the time thrush is not "flaky". Do you remember if your regular doctor took a culture?
Being an advocate for your own healthcare is top priority. Please be safe and make an appointment with a specialist. Here is a link to our appointment line http://mayocl.in/1mtmR63 if you wish to seek health care here at Mayo Clinic.
@brit, If you are ok sharing, would you mind replying to the community with an update on how you are doing after you have been seen for a second opinion?
are you saying you had this tongue roughage you had was cancer?
I had tongue roughage and my neighbor bought me a special brush to get it off. It sounds
like you are in the early stages, and it needs to be addressed now. Dr. Siversky at MCV
is a specialist in oral issues. My tongue roughage condition eventually led to a condition called
lichen planus, the lichen planus turned into erosive lichen planus and that turned into
cancer. You could have burning mouth, as my neighbor has. My Neighbor's doctor
told her all this comes from stress. It comes from the Immune system. Sooo you need
to find out what the problem is and it may be necessary to have a light biopsy in that
area. Your life depends on having a good doctor and YOU need to do some research
on your own with your symptoms on the internet. You need to become educated
so you can communicate with a good oral surgeon or ENT. I wish i had done internet
research then I would have known the serious cond. I was dealing with and I know I
would have confronted until I found the right doctor to listen to me and taken it serious
and now it is said that they don't know what to do after the fact. i don't want to alarm
you, but it does need attention in the early stages and it sounds like you in the very
early stages and it is a condition not yet cancer.
@elizabethbryant, Thanks for sharing your experience with @brit. It is important to keep looking for answers and being proactive. Teresa
I also talk to the Lord and Father every day but something that has just happened in the last few months is this growth on my tongue.
It is bitter tasting and flaky. I have been to my regular doctor who suggested it was thrush. I took the medication he prescribed to no
avail. He then sent me to a ENT specialist who gave me some kind of medication costing over a $1000. My insurance would not cover
it and with no sure signal from him I decided I would not spend the $1,000. What next? Has anyone out there experienced this?
I am starting to get concerned. I do take other medication for high blood pressure and diabeties. HELP
Thank so much Patti
