weight loss and long distance walking
Has anyone had disappearance of HCM with weight loss and walking 8-10 miles each morning? All my symptoms have disappeared over 3 months of gradually increasing walks to 3+ hours of walking each morning and covering 8-10 miles. additionally I have dropped 25-30 pounds. I sweat off 2-3 poumds each walk but replace fluid loss during day after walk. Its like I dont have HCM anymore and outflow tract obstruction is abscent.

Great
Fantastic. Walking 8-10 miles. Wow! I walk 1-2 miles and thought I was doing good.
Have you had your EF checked lately?
Walking improves cardiovascular fitness so can benefit HCM. Then taking off that much weight has also relieved a lot of stress off the heart and HCM.
Yeah, over 65 was all dictation said. just finished another 3 hour walk. Now just 20pounds more to go and will be at college weight when rowing on OSU crew team. I may start some uphill walking to get ready for chukar season this fall. I surely dont feel 73 yo, more like 33. Your walking 1-2 miles is amazing from what support group reports. Try taking 10-20 second rest periods and work up to 2 hours walking. 4-6 am is very peaceful time with few if any humans, lots of birds and wildlife singing and chittering. I finds intermittent fasting and walking a sure fire way to loose weight. fighting my one enemy of liking diet Pepsi too much and wanting a popsicle before bedtime . Good Luck!! I dont know about you but this diagnosis really shook me up for 4 months. Listening to praise songs about Jesus got me to just live life to the fullest with the time we all have left.
@brajoh
I will say again what an inspiration you are!
I have about 50 lbs to lose to get down to my Sprint Triathlon race weight. Have not done a race now for couple of years now. I was doing good controlling weight but got COVID (for first time) in 2024 that went into serious sinus infection then serious bronchial infection and really kept my exercising almost to nothing for 3 months.
I have the same addiction to my Coke Zero Cherry. I try to limit to one bottle a day. I just enjoy the flavor but have read the artiticial sugar the body can't distiguish from regular sugar and you get insulin spikes.
When you wrote take 10-20 second rest do you mean stop or just slow walk? I used to do 3 miles before got COVID last year as the Sprint Triathlons (Swim, bike, run) are 3 mile run (which I jog/walk).
I live in Florida so very hot and humid now so have to go out early. Wish I had the same walk area you have as it sounds very relaxing.
the 10-20 second rest is for 1st 4-6 weeks walking ( after this , you dont need to rest anymore). Hiked Mckenzie today ( think if some of the cleanest water in america).We get our tap water from this river. Its full of Spring Chinook salmon now. Sounds like there are more active HCM"ers than one may imagine. I go out early just because Im an insomniac ( and I am at peace with this) but being a clinical Pharmacist Im not fool enough to take a chemical to sleep soundly. I am missing the lower left lobe of my left lung, having it removed in 2009 followed by 3 months of chemo. I feel too many people define life saying I cant do this or that instead of the I can philosophy. Good Luck getting weight off and getting in shape. Florida is a wonderful place to live.
When the weather is too hot and humid or cold and the ground icy, I am a mall walker. Not as much fun as walking outside in nature, but I like it better than the treadmill at the gym. Anyone who walks can try to think of an alternative plan to carry out their good obsession.
in Oregon you have to treat rain like sunshine or you would be inside all the time. I would tell my diabetic patients that we have these amazine things called rubber boots, rain coats and pants and these things called umbrellas so no excuse for not walking, rain or shine. For lifestyle changes studies show that 97.5% of paints cannot make changes for more than 1 year, markedly less after one year. If one carves out 2-3 hours a day before attempting lifestyle changes to just have for there personal time to do anything then starts using this time for lifestyle changes (diet and exercise) then this doubles success for weight loss and exercise. I started a walking group after work and after word spread there were a goup of 15 that worked up to walking 4-5 miles daily. Cumulative average weight loss was 23 pounds. I was using GLP1 agonist, metformin and SGLT2 inhibitors and this group had similar weight loss. I started using these in 2013. Many other providers did not and would boast that " I never use new drugs in my practice until they have been on the market for 6 years. They are all eating humble pie now ha ha
