@lioness I have heard that more than 3 mg often causes nightmares. Do you have any problem with that? Tramadol is for pain, correct?
@gloriajean melatonin does not make you suddenly feel like groggy, at least it does not for me. It is nothing like your typical sleeping pills, which I will not take either. I tried them once a long time ago and did not like them. I have also tried "sleep aids" that have the same ingredient as benadryl and it does make me sleep but even with a tiny dose of it -- half a pill --, I don't like the way I feel in the morning. The recommended dosage is 2 pills.

Contentandwel? Gloriejean No Meletonin at 5mg does not give me nightmares and yes Tramadol is for pain since I have fibromyalgia I take it to relax my muscles along with Melatonin theres no groggines with it unlike sleeping pills.

@marcella1 Eating carbs make me sleepy. I rarely fall asleep unintentionally, as in when I am watching TV, but once in a while it just overtakes me, I can't keep my eyelids open, and there I go. Unfortunately one of the places I do fall asleep unintentionally is when driving, I have had a problem with that since I was in my 20s so I do often pull over and take a quick nap. I had to do that recently on a drive home that was only an hour drive. I got halfway and couldn't hold my eyes open so I pulled into a shopping center lot and dozed for about 15 - 20 minutes. When we go long distances my husband always drives and I generally do take a nap at some point.

I am inquiring because Ik also suffered from Insomnia and I now sleep soundly! You might also consider asking your Physician for a Sleep Study to see if you have Sleep Apnea!

@lioness glad it doesn't give you nightmares. Frankly I have been reluctant to take more than 3 mg because of what I have read.

@lioness I did the same with my son and daughter. I hated it when I was on the way home from somewhere and one of them dozed off because then they wouldn't take their afternoon nap.

Hello @martinaje and welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect.

I appreciate your joining the discussion about insomnia. You have mentioned that you have tried many things and nothing works. If you are comfortable doing so, would you please list the things you have tried? Medications, relaxation techniques, etc.? This will help us understand what you have done in the past.

Many health problems as well as medications for heart (especially beta blockers), etc. can result in sleep problems. Have you looked into that possibility with your doctor?

Also, I was just wondering if you have had a sleep study done to see if there might be any breathing-related problems causing insomnia.

Once again, welcome to Connect, I look forward to reading more of your posts and getting to know you better.

I've been on 12.5 mg of Ambien CR for over 10 years. I think I started in 2002. The doctor I used to have didn't care. He was the type to ask me what I wanted rather than discussing a way to cure the problem without being dependent on prescription medication. He retired and I found another complacent PCP, who I can't seem to get to spend more than the allotted 5 minutes with me to actually discuss the issue. I'm very frustrated. I've tried substituting Melatonin and end up with weird dreams and nightmares that wake me up throughout the night. I've tried weaning off it when I was out of work last summer, but once it was gone, I could get to sleep and stay asleep until almost 6 a.m., if even, and then it's time to get up! Before I was on the Ambien, I took Trazadone for a little while and it worked great and when I stopped, I didn't have any problems and had a relatively easy time getting to sleep and staying asleep, but now I can't do it. I lay there listening to my husband sleeping and every little sound and my mind just goes. It can be about any number of things, worry, not worry. If I try to think of something that's relaxing like sitting on the beach, my mind will wind around until I'm lying there obsessing about something. For example, I'm on the beach. Who am I with? My friend Mary. I haven't seem Mary in a long time. Why? And so on and so forth. It's like pulling a thread.

The health plan we have now is terrible and they don't cover Ambien. Plus, because Ambien is now classified as a Class 4 opioid, my PCP insists that I come into her office every 3 months for her to write a new prescription. So I went from paying $10 a refill to paying $50+ and paying my PCP $30 every 3 months. I want off this treadmill!
