Tonsillectomy and Adenoidectomy

Posted by Eightieschild @pamelacelia, Jan 7, 2017

Hello, anyone had a child that did a Tonsillectomy and Adenoidectomy (T&A), my son is scheduled for surgery on Friday coming at hospital and the Dr spoke to us and explained everything and what to expect afterwards and so on but I still prefer to hear from a parent that actually experienced the surgery with their child, my son is five, he hates taking medication, he won't eat or drink at all when his tonsils are infected, I'm so worried about after the surgery because the Dr said the best way for the throat to heal is by eating and drinking and even though it will be painful he has to in order for the dead tissue to be replaced by new one.

Hi @pamelacelia. 2 of my 3 children had to have them removed. They did fantastic. They had been sick for so long. I actually had their surgeries done together. Both ate right after surgery. It is so much better to do when younger than to wait. I had mine out at 18 years old and it was so difficult. I was in the Hospital 3 days for bleeding complications. Kiddos do far better.

Prayers for speedy recovery!!

Hi @dawn_giacabazi thanks for replying, what about jaw and tongue pain, Dr said because the tongue have to be moved out of the way there will be some bruising and pain and jaw pain because of having to clamp the mouth open. My son is very difficult with this tonsils, the first time he had an infection we didn't know what it was and he didn't eat for two days, he had the fever so I thought that's all it was, when we took him to the medical center it was only then we found out it was tonsil infection and Dr gave him an antibiotic injection and it was then he was better and ate when we got home, I know him, he'll be afraid to eat after the surgery and we were told until he is eating a proper meal he will not be discharged, the hospital is free so it's not a matter of money but he'll be missing school and then we'll have the other kids at home and my husband won't get time of work, one parent has to be there at all times, but to get it done it has to be done he's had to take too much antibiotics for a child his age, I really can't deal with the stress anymore.

Hello, my son had his T&A on Friday, everything went great, we came home from hospital today, he's very quiet, doesn't want to eat, I know he's experiencing some pain but the drs said that in order for his throat to heal properly he has to eat, he doesn't even want ice cream, he hates taking medicine orally, he always has but he got antibiotics to use and I know it's important that he takes it, I don't know how to get him to eat anything, we tried feeding him some soft boiled macaroni tonight and he just threw up the few pieces that he'd already eaten, he doesn't like fruit at all either, I'm worried he's going to continue resisting our efforts to feed him, he's already lost weight just in the last couple days. Can any one offer any suggestions on what we might do to get him to eat?

So happy to here he is home. Give him time push liquids. He will eat. What was md advise? He just went through surgery his tummy might be reacting to anesthesia. Maybe try some Popsicles. You could do Tylenol suppositories if the pain gets too bad and the doctor says it's OK.

Hi @dawn_giacabazi, thanks for the well wishes, he did throw up a couple times but just clear liquid which is good because it indicates no bleeding, the Dr's actually told us to try getting him to eat soft foods because the food will help remove the dead tissues, he's drinking lots of water but he's afraid to eat, we did get him to eat a couple graham cookies and drink some juice today, he isn't talking much but he doesn't seem to be in pain, I actually bought the Para-Denk suppositories, so I'm watching him, hopefully by tomorrow he'll eat a little more, he doesn't want the ice cream or bread or any of his favorite snacks. I know it's just for a couple days and then he'll be back to his old self again.

My five year old had T&A on Friday last, he didn't eat much before surgery and of course after he didn't want food either but he started eating better on Sunday however for the last few nights he's been complaining about a tummy ache, it's severe enough that it's waking him up from sleep at night, it seems to be worse at night time, he'll get up crying and fussing and I'll rub his tummy with peppermint oil and coconut oil mixed together, he started fussing again a short while ago when I gave him his dinner and I asked him to show me where the pain was and he pointed to his navel, I touched to the side of his tummy and asked if it hurt there he said no and pointed to his navel again, I'm worried, what should I do? Does anyone have any experience with this kind of thing with their little one? The pain seems to bother him when he's eating too.

I forgot to add that I thought it was gas, but he's eating well enough, so I really don't know and then too it's localized pain it isn't all over his tummy according to what he said
