What treatments has helped or not helped generalize granuloma annulare

Posted by bmh @bmh, Jul 9, 2024

I have tried 3 different topical creams, no help. Triamincilone, chlobesol, bethamethasone. Kenalog injections do work but they will not inject me anymore as I have too many. I tried otezla, after 2 months, just more lesions and I couldn't take the side effects anymore. Now I am going to try a jak inhibitor called opzelura cream. I'll test that for 2-3 months. If that doesn't help ill try Hydroxychloroquine pills. Most don't bother me, some itch. I just keep getting more, probably close to 100 and growing more. Anyone have had any success or fails?

Hi @bmh, A few years ago I had a small grouping of granuloma annulare near my ankle. I didn’t know what the lesions were but they had changed from little bumps to the raised ringed area. My dermatologist diagnosed them right away and gave me a prescription for Tacrolimus Ointment 1%. The areas healed and completely disappeared within the first week. I kept using it for the recommended 3+ weeks past the disappearance. They’ve never returned.

It is a topical ointment of a strong anti-inflammatory drug, so I don’t know if there’s a limit to how much can be applied if you have numerous areas. This may be something to ask your dermatologist about to see if it would be an option for you. I wish you well with finding a product that works.

I found several discussions in the forum. Here is one link for you. More can be found by typing in Granuloma Annulare in the search window above.

I was just recently diagnosed with GA. It appeared on my hands and face out of no where. It was so very painful and no matter what I did it wouldn’t go away. I called my Derm for an appt. and when he looked at my hands and face he said and I quote” What is that”? I said you tell me. He proceeded to tell me he’s never seen it before. Anyway after he prescribed ointment. I used it for 2 months without results. Seen him again in April he did a biopsy and he put me on Predisone for the swelling and pain. The Predisone worked, the GA disappeared, but I could only stay on them for a limited amt of time. So now that I’m off Predisone the GA is coming back. I’m at my wits end to know that I’m having to go through this again. Any advise would be appreciated.

I have had GA for about 15 years now. First one showed up on my left ankle, and then 3 on my arms, then both legs. I have about 20 of them. Some are "rings" some are just red bumps. I have spent years just trying to cover them up. I love long sleeves and pants in winter because it hides them. The summer is worst! I use lots of concealer and the ones on my arms require just the right placement of jewelry to hide them. I have even used fake tattoos to cover some of them. Anyway as far as treatments, i have used the usual corticosteroid creams and ointments that the dermatologist suggested with no results at all. I have also used something called Cordran Tape, which also didn't work. I also tried the injections with no change at all!. i just went to a new Dermatologist yesterday who is going to be starting me on Hydroxychloroquine pills. Not sure if anyone else has had any good results from this, but I'll try it! I told the doctor i would try anything or pay anything to get rid of these things! I also tried using Vitamin E. I keep hearing it works for some people. I took it orally for a while and then i was told to use it directly on them. I did this for weeks and i have seen no results. I am now hopeful these pills will do something! Pray for me!

Hi, I have GA and I know what you are going through. I have it on my hands and face …. I find it painful and itchy. The treatments my Derm has given me hasn’t worked, so I’m going to ask him to scribe the Hydroxychloroquine when I see him in 2 weeks. Hope it is working for you.
