Pregabalin & Gabapentin Not Working.

Posted by myfeetareonfire @myfeetareonfire, Mar 15, 2023

Okay I've had neuropathy for over 3 years now and neither of these medications are working. I see a doctor in a few weeks to see about a stimulator? I heard they only work half the time. Is this true or a myth? Cause it would be a huge headache with no resolution. Thanks for your time and assistance.

Thank you for your reply,I sincerely hope they can find a medication to help us all soon and also make it affordable,I have been on opioids for over 2 years and would love to come off it.

I started to develop PN in 2007, mostly losing feelings in my toes on both feet. By early 2012 my pain was so bad I could not wear socks nor have sheets touch my feet at night. By then I had tried all of the drugs, they all came with bad side effects and no relief. The only thing that helped was a low dose of Morphine. So in 2012 I had a Spinal Cord Stimulator implanted. It helped with the smaller nerves relieving about 60% of my pain. This allowed me to work snd get around better. Now it’s 2025, all my small nerves appear to be dead, no feeling in either feet with my large nerves causing pain. I do not use my Spinal Cord Stimulator. Not sure if this post helps, this is what happened to me.

It worked for awhile and then stopped. Gabapentin is the only thing that works for me right now.
They are working on a medication that isn’t an opiate. It’s supposed to block pain. Hope it comes out soon.

I have halved cabamazepine which is similar to pregabalamin. Taking METHYLCOBALAMIN and turmeric. Alcohol and old age had reduced my B12 production . No pain and feeling 100 % . Stopped alcohol too.Look up , alcohol effect on B12 now. Go for it.

I was diagnosed with (idopathic) peripheral neuropathy 18 years ago. I would truly LOVE to give you a positive report with possible solutions, but I have not found any to date. I, initially was prescribed Gabapentin. It did NOT help, but I was urged to stick with it, because it might take time. I stuck with it for at least 3 years, without better results. My insurance would not approve Lyrica. After about 3 years, I developed mild hives. At that point, insurance approved Lyrica. Lyrica did not provide any improvement. Without any results/improvements, I discontinued Lyrica (saved $$). PN has become more painful. At this point, the pain and burning sensation is constant. Nothing makes any improvement at all. I was diagnosed with Neuroendocrine Cancer (primary, small intestine, with mets to liver, pancreas & lymph) in August 2022. The PN causes more pain/discomfort than the cancer. I hope you will find a solution.

Like everyone else I started out taking Gabapentin 300mg, then slowly increasing. Didn't really do anyhting at all to help. My doctor switched it to Lyrica (Pregabalin) starting at 75mg, then 150mg and now 200mg. This has helped a little, but it hasn't taken all the pain away or stopped the neuropathic jolts that I get. Not really sure on a percentage, but it has helped.

@insanepain I understand all of that, Gabapentin gave me headaches so I now take
450 mg Pregabalin and they say it’s a lot but once I added Amitriptyline it works better. I took it for years but wined off for other meds but now I’m back on because it’s the only medication that really works for me. They start you at 20 mg and build. I’m at 200mg again now. It has some side effects but really can’t tell because I already have those effects on their own without medication. Anyways Amitriptyline is very inexpensive which is a great benefit but can be tough to find your sweet spot through side effects and benefits. Hope you get some relief soon.

@mister1 Thanks. I will ask my painmanagement doctor about adding Amitriptyline. I was on Cymbolta, but that gave me headaches and made me nauseous so I stopped it. Good luck to you as well.

Try alpha lipoic acid 600 mg in morning - brand Source Naturals. It works for me - mine is idiopathic - plus good grade B complex vitamin.
