B-6 vitamin danger!

Posted by Lynsorensen @lynsorensen, Dec 11, 2017

With the assistance of a neurologist at Mayo Clinic, I have almost completely eliminated the uncontrolled muscle spasms now. First and foremost: beware of taking multi-vitamin capsules that have B6 listed. B-6 overdosage (which is contained in every multivitamin I found in stores and on the internet) can cause loss of muscle control and spasms in some people. So can gluten found in many foods so now I am also gluten free. I now work out with a personal trainer 3 days a week and do water aerobics another 2 days. Got off gabapentin and also clonazepam. Using CBD oil capsules each morning (no more opioids or chemicals) and using a CBD topical ointment to rub on my leg muscles each night. He says I don't need him anymore! And I don't. No more shaking or muscle cramps or pain. Still a little numbness but that is receding also.

My neurologist prescribed B6 and Magnesium oxide…

Hello @linnythepoo - I love that user name! Welcome to Mayo Connect - I'm happy you found us. It is a great place to ask questions, share your health concerns and learn what others with similar health issues are doing for treatment. Yikes is right from my perspective but I have no medical training or background. I would want to get an opinion or see a neurologist first.

Have you received a diagnosis of a form of neuropathy from a neurologist or had any tests to confirm the diagnosis?

I had a roundabout discussion through a 3rd party who I asked to check out a list of supplements that I'm taking for my peripheral neuropathy and this person giving the opinion was a neurologist. They said meh to my supplements and said they would probably recommend Metanx which contains L-methylfolate calcium, an active form of folate, and other essential B vitamins (B6 and B12) instead. B12 is in my list of supplements but I had already heard some bad stuff about B6 so I filed her opinion away under the category - it's my body, my decision. It's really a good idea to learn everything you can about your health condition and any drug used for treatment paying close attention to any side effects. I don't have any medical training or background so this is just based on my opinion and how I've dealt with my own idiopathic small fiber peripheral neuropathy.

Here's a more reliable source from the University of Virginia Health System - Peripheral Neuropathy and Vitamin B6 (PDF):

Hope this helps,
John

I am surprised to hear that vitB6 has such a suspect history in connection with neuropathy. I checked several very well known supplements used for neuropathy and every one contained B6 of various amounts. I also checked my own Bcomplex and this too contained a small quantity. Where has the adverse info about B6 come from.

@lynsorensen that's great news. Lots of info on B6 toxicity out there. This is one of the better sites I've found that puts it all together in an easy to understand way.

That site is utter rubbish. I know it’s old but every piece of advice is wrong and it’s saturated with rubbish advertising. It’s says a high blood test level of B6 means you are deficient (rubbish!) and that taking 200mg a day is perfectly safe (rubbish!) - today it’s 10mg and that is being reviewed as possibly too high.
A blood test that says your B6 level are high, means exactly that. Do not take B6 supplements.

I’m familiar with these articles. I was suffering extreme fatigue, tingling, ataxia and eye focus variability when B6 toxicity came to my attention. One of these articles suggested the patients B6 levels were elevated at almost 300.
Mine were over 1600! From taking small doses (25mg) hidden in a magnesium supplement. The new recommended daily maximum is 10mg (down from 100). Coming down isn’t easy and rebound back into symptoms, just when you think you are recovering is a common phenomenon. I’d like to see all the B6 issues collected into one group. It’s a serious issue and I’m finding I have more information than the local GP. Fatigue and brain fog are the most difficult symptoms to cope with (for me).

I see my Dr again in February for follow up. He told me to discontinue my multivitamin vitamin containing B6. I was also eating a significant amount of salmon and tuna. I have eliminated these over the last month and will have bloodwork this Thursday to check my level again. Check all food and drink labels for B6.

I am so confused. Just diagnosed with neuropathy 6 months ago. Am on a long road to trying to discover some answers. So many people said anti inflammatory diet which includes salmon twice a week and tuna 3 times a week. So after reading your comments, I don't know what to do. Doctor's are useless. I am deep diving every day trying to hit on something. I am only 66. I feel like it is something so obvious. I also have AFIB and saw where some anti arythmic medicine can cause hi B6 levels. I feel like I am on an island.

You are not alone and should stick to the antiinflammatory foods. Sugar can cause inflammation and pain. Maybe you can try acupuncture. Exercise is also a must. I keep hoping that a cure for this horror will be found soon. Set some goals for yourself and develop a deterimined spirit.

I completely understand. I am 72 and have had neuropathy for 35+ years. The pain has become unbearable and my doc just lowered my pain meds. I have researched all my life and never found anything that helps. Tried various meds, treatments, etc. I wish you luck and hope you can find something that works for you. I am now confined to a wheelchair, not what I expected for my retirement years. Best of luck to you. Keep pushing. It’s all you can do.
