Post Sleeve Surgery Issues

Anyone know how long the gas lasts after surgery? I realized there’d be some right after, but reading it can last 6-9 months. If so, is there something to take for it?

Thanks for any advise

Hi
I think you really need to thrash this out with your Doctors.
From your opening thread you are expressing some typical IBS symptoms.
I'm taking "IBS" medication for a totally different disease, dysautonomia, which happens to be incurable and untreatable at this time. Any medications that have been more of a problem than a help have been eliminated through tough consultation with my Gastro specialists. I have had to learn to advocate for my health, Dr's are not the holy grail of medicine my generation grew up believing. We now understand each other and work together for my benefit.
Cheers

I have talked to my doctors and they finally realizes that my symptoms are from my Short gut syndrome not IBS symptoms. Diarrhea is a very common symptom for Short gut syndrome. I don't have bloating, it's not related to what I eat,I don't have IBS symptoms my symptoms are Short gut syndrome symptoms. My GI doctor is finally helping me with my Short gut syndrome and not IBS.
Medications for IBS makes Short gut syndrome worse not better and that's why my doctors are no longer giving me IBS Medications.

Wrong. You said that IBS wasn't a medical condition which it is a medical condition.

Hi,
Wrong, I said IBS is not a disease to be exact. It is a medical condition but that does not make it a disease.
But that is no matter as you seem to be now on track with your Dr, and that is what is important.

Hi everyone. I would love your opinion. Very long story short: in June 2022 I had bariatric sleeve surgery. 4 months later my life completely changed. It started with extreme constipation, severe abdominal pain, trapped gas. It’s been over 2 years and my life is so bad. I am in constant chronic severe abdominal pain with several symptoms with it. From the morning I open my eyes until going to sleep. Sleep is the only relief I get. No matter what I eat or whether I go to the bathroom or not…I am in severe pain. Every single day for 2 years. I was diagnosed with IBS but I feel like I’m dying. I can’t stress how bad this is. I barely go out, barely go to the store and miss many events. My quality of life is so bad. I have been to many doctors and have had many tests done. All negative. Could it be something other than IBS and the doctors have missed it?

Have you ever been tested to determine if it is internal hernias, marginal size ulcers, gallstones, adhesions, strictures, leaks at your surgical site? Could be one of them mi

I never said that IBS was a disease. It's a health condition just like I have said. I didn't say anything about it being a disease.
My doctors are treating my Short gut syndrome which is a health condition not a disease.

I had my gastric sleeve surgery 7 weeks ago and it’s been a nightmare as I can’t eat anything beyond very light soups etc without throwing up! I’m so weak and in fact traumatised due to constant vomiting when I try to eat something of substance like lean protein etc.My consultant confirms there’s a complication with a portion of the sleeve being too narrow. I’m down for a two-tier distended op! My goodness, I’m just so tired and in pain all over due to lack of movement! Has any had this type of experience?

@adaj
Welcome to Mayo Connect, sounds like your going through a very rough time.
Not familiar with two-tier distended op, is that surgery to correct the narrow area?

I have read that sometimes they can do endoscopic dilation, it is a procedure that uses a balloon or other device to stretch a narrowed area in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. It's used to treat blockages caused by inflammation, scar tissue, or other conditions.

Have they done labs to make sure you are not anemic from lack of food?
Do you have follow up surgery or something scheduled to correct?

Hi! Thank you so much for responding. My bariatric surgeon along with a second one said they have never heard of this as a complication of my sleeve surgery. Yes I had all those tests done..also a pelvic ultrasound…an upper GI Series…a test where I ate something with contrast and they watched how I digested it. I’ve seen at least 8 gastroenterologists…1 surgeon..1 rectal surgeon and 2 bariatric surgeons. I research everyday. I just need some relief.

i think I've read all your posts. I don't see where you've listed your medications . Medications are frequently the culprits.

Talk to a dietitian about getting a high calorie meal replacement shake. They can be added to tradition diets and easily soups

Thank you Laurie,
I’m glad to know that it’s related as a byproduct of my sleeve surgery. Full…yes as far as my new stomachs 8oz capacity goes BUT in all these years since the surgery I’ve only overeaten one time and it made me nauseated and I had to pull over and throw up. I still eat only very small amounts and have not stretched my stomached like I’ve heard horror stories of others doing. It looks to me like when I get that 8oz capacity about filled up that triggers most commonly these sneezing fits or secondly the hiccups. That makes sense to me. I know my limits and I seldom approach that 8oz maximum.
Again, thank you for your response.

Hi, @cmodling - wondering how you are doing? Do you still experience the sneezing and hiccups when you eat and get full?

Hi @theilman01- how are things going after your surgery? Did the gas go away?
