When in PMR remission: What's your experience with covid vaccine?

Posted by pacarolyn @pacarolyn, Oct 21, 2022

I have delayed getting any of the first Covid vaccines because I was waiting for the NOVAVAX vaccine that was more traditional in its development. It is now available and approved for use. Not many pharmacies have it but COSTCO does. Has anyone gotten this vaccine. What has been your experience so far. It requires two shots, no booster series mentioned but can be taken as a booster for other vax.

I got my second Covid booster (4th shot in total) in May of 2022 - seven days later I developed symptoms of PMR. Coincidence no one knows but I’m leery of getting anymore boosters. Just being careful of indoor crowds.

I didn't get my second booster after experiencing PMR after my first one. I've just recovered from Covid (second time). Took Plaxovid for this one as it is being prescribed more often now. Felt like a cold and I was lacking energy but am doing fine now.

I haven't done much of anything since my relapse in August. I wear a N95 mask everywhere.
I don't believe your PMR is a coincidence at all.

I developed PMR over a year ago a week following my 1st covid booster vaccine. I went from a healthy active person walking Approx 5 kilometres daily to not being able to stand up or take my weight on mu legs. Pain around my neck, shoulders pelvic girdle burning sensation in my feet, responded well to Prednisolone since Jan 2022. 3 attempts at tapering with relapses. I have found Chi Gong exercises helpful in easing the pain. Acupuncture and prescribed Chinese Medication of no help to me. I take Calcium and Vitamin D and had one course of Methotrexate x 4 weeks on advice of Rheumatologist . Diagnosis PMR directly related to the Covid vaccine. I declined 2 further vaccine boosters as I don’t know why my body reacted so bad to this vaccine and i hope further research will reveal why some people develop PMR after The Pfizer vaccination. I will never accept another Covid vaccine and prepared to accept the consequences. The vaccine did so much harm to me and many others but yet saved millions of lives. The vaccine companies now have a duty to invest heavily from their enormous profits to investigate/ research independently why some people are impacted negatively and not others.

Same. Onset after first Covid vax May 2021 (although went undiagnosed at that time), escalated 10 days after second Covid vax August 2021 with same symptoms as you describe. This went on until December 2021 when I insisted upon blood work for RA. Inflammation markers were through the roof. Now-retired GP urgently referred me to a Neurologist here in Halifax. I was immediately put on 20 mg. Prednisone and still working through the PMR, now morphed to GCA and at 60 mg. These were Pfizer vaccines. Will never take another. Have never had a flu shot, or shingles. Previously completely well and on the move. Not so much at this time.

I have a question. I have recently been diagnosed with PMR. I received my Covid booster three years ago and haven’t had any booster since then. My booster was the Moderna.
Could it be possible that my diagnosis is related to the booster even though my booster was three years ago? I’ve read a lot about boosters being related to the PMR diagnosis but being mine was three years ago and I just was diagnosed. I was just curious if that diagnosis could be still related to the booster.

I have been in remission for just over a year. As a senior I chose to get the updated vaccine last fall AND the recommended booster in April. I experienced no major side effects with either one. I’ve had Covid once and never want to go through that again.

This is a tangent, but I wonder if people know that recent research indicates the shingles vaccine might help prevent dementia. Here is output from Google AI:

"A study published in Nature suggests that the shingles vaccine may reduce the risk of developing dementia. Specifically, the study found that people who received the shingles vaccine were 20% less likely to develop dementia of any type than those who did not. This protective effect was stronger in women than men. A study in JAMA also found that those eligible for the shingles vaccine were 38% less likely to die of dementia than those who were ineligible. "

I read an abstract of that study. They think that other viruses also may lie dormant and may be inhibited from coming out of dormancy with a vaccine thus also have less likelihood of attacking brain cells and leading to dementia.

I’m not sure on this. The first vaccine for shingles was taken off market. And the one now has not been around that long. I’m just overly cautious since the Covid shot has done a lot of harm and not convinced that it has prevented this flu. People get the shots and still get Covid. Go figure.

Viruses evolve. For flu and Covid, they have to keep updating the vaccines to deal with the changed viruses. They do say that if you have the Covid vaccine and then catch Covid, your sickness won't be as bad.

I just checked, and the Shingrix vaccine was approved in 2017. That's the same year Actemra was approved for GCA. I've been taking Actemra for 10 months. It has allowed me to taper the prednisone down to 3 mg per day with no problems.

I had the Shingrix vaccine several years ago, well before I developed PMR and GCA. I would really prefer not to get shingles. It sounds like it can be really painful.

I took 2 Covid vaccines and have been very faithful with flu shots. I got my last flu shot last October and exactly 10 days after vaccine, I lost partial vision in one eye and have been diagnosed with GCA, temporal arteritis. I think I am done with vaccines.
