What statin (if any) have you taken long term?

Posted by cantbelievethis @cantbelievethis, Jul 10, 2023

First off, I realize all stains have side effects so I am "not" asking for one with *no side effects*. I am wanting to know in general what people take.

What has been your history in taking them? Did you start with one then move on to another, etc.

My experience with them has been Lipitor a few years back. I felt aches and pains from it so it was discontinued. So then doctor tried Crestor. I am not the best person to be talking about statins because after taking the crestor, I eventually stopped taking it as taking a med every day was "getting to me". (notice no thought for my health, just the inconvenience of taking a med daily.)

I don't recall anything bad from the crestor but I didn't take it that long.

Which brings me to the present day. Cardiologist who I just started to see ....new to him and hadn't been under the care of one prior...primary care was ordering the statins, well the new cardiologist wants me on a statin and ordered Lipitor. I wish I had spoken up and told him I had been prescribed it in the past and it didn't work out too well but was nervous etc. during the appointment and thought "give it another try, maybe this time it will work". I just got the RX and haven't picked it up from the pharmacy yet.

So, what if any statin has worked best for you. What dose do you take?

Doctor said he is starting me off with 20 mgs a day.

Cholesterol level: 220.

Thank you!!

Cheers. 🙂

IO,

From everything I have read or heard, CAC always increases.

It increases with time, and it increases when one begins statin therapy as the statin begins to calcify the soft plaques.

So true. 16 years on Atorvastatin and first CAC score after 15 years was 2,000+. And one 40% Blockage to go along with mild case of AFib. Taking Eliqus now 2Xs per day. Frankly feel like crap since the Eliquis and because I can’t take a beta blocker due to bradycardia while sleeping I have these spikes of tachycardia that take 4-5 hours to come down with any exertion in yard work, out outbound in hot sun etc.

For my hyponatremia I have been taking 1750 mg of salt tablets each day to keep my
Sodium levels at 135.
I have developed plaque on my both carotid arteries.
70% and 50%.
I think the salt tablets have created plaque on my arteries.
I do have an alternative med called urea.
But I wonder if the salt tablets are connected to my carotid plaque.

I think that some doctors are rethinking waiting for arteries to be 80 and 90 % blocked before stenting A second opinion wouldn’t be out of the question for you to think going forward. I take avortastatin My bad cholesterol is in the 20’s and I have many heart issues Good luck

I moved your questions about taking statins here, @gerrieme, so you could talk to others discussing statins:

- What statin (if any) have you taken long term https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/what-statin-if-any-has-worked-best-for-you-as-far-as-side-effects/

Hoping members such as @eclary84 @gerrycf @cntrlcoastgirl @emo and others can share their experience and research on whether statins will help in your case with carotid blockage 50%, left artery 70% right artery.

Statins, as we know, lower your bad cholesterol so that more plaque does not accumulate. Without that, 50% becomes 70% becomes 90%, and then you need a stent at best and bypass surgery at worst. Statins also calcify any soft plaque, which is good because soft plaque is the kind that can rupture and cause a blood clot.

Once you have cardiovascular disease, it must be treated. Medication is the easiest way and often the only way apart from actual surgery.

Hi
Gee 20 Level Bad Cholesterol! And you have reduced that total by your good cholesterol? You should.
On thyroxin 125mg daily so no more than Avorstatin 20mg.
When on it dropped 2 from 7 level but 1.8 good = 5.2. then another 2 = 3.2

I felt some aches. Really didn't believe I needed a statin and stopped.
There is an alternative Ezetimber but decided not to try them.

Statins read all about it. The country gets money from prescribing it. We all need cholesterol. Some foods will dispose of it. Sorry forgotten what.
