Dairy and prostate cancer: Conflicting information

Posted by rice @rice, Apr 18, 2024

Hi! I am 73 and have 6 prostate cancer that is being watched. I drink a lot of milk and eat a lot of cheese I have read some studies that say whole milk was associated with prostate cancer and to drink fat free milk. Then I read another study saying that skim milk was associated with prostate cancer, but high fat milk was ok to drink. Then I read another study that says no association between dairy and Prostate cancer. Kind of confusing ! does anyone have an opinion on this

Not on statin and cholesterol now great. I did statin last year and tried all kinds of things doctors advised for decades, to be honest it didn't help with any of them (including advised exercise) on cholesterol, or at least not much. Maybe statins are better than nothing but not by much for me. Those high dose niacin pills that make you flush did work somewhat for me, and did that for a long time till it became unpopular amongst doctors who now advise against that route. I am sure I could go back to statin but it doesn't really do anything for me. Plant based diet did real good job on my cholesterol, only thing that I tried ever that worked on cholesterol. In the game changers movie you see it had that effect on others in the movie, as well as other things. Hoping it does more for me, but it sure does a job on cholesterol.

That’s great bj, I am sure YOUR plant based diet is a serious, comprehensive one. Perhaps those who fail with this diet “cheat” more than they realize!

It is very hard at first for sure to do a plant based diet. One trouble I ran into recently was using too much oil for calories. It isn't easy, and it isn't easy being green as kermit says, or having prostate issues. Thing is prostate issues develop over many decades and we are suddenly pressed into trying things to solve and overcome, nothing comes easy that is for sure. It would be way better if doctors had better ideas about prostates when we were 20 or 30 and let us know how to solve them, but at most you get a PSA which is a crappy test if there ever was one. Then there are things like Tulsa Pro that are truly revolutionary, but the paperwork medical system kills such innovativeness in the medical field. You can get it, but it isn't promoted or hardly talked about, Medical and innovativeness unfortunately died with advent of medical paperwork.

I know it’s an old tread by here it’s my two cents, milk has grown hormones and saturated fats not good for the prostate or any other cancer, if you read about cancer diet in Mayo Clinic and UCSF it’s always points to a vegan diet and exercise in moderation but consistently, time will tell if worked or not for me. Please please don’t buy anything that you going to ingest from Amazon 90% of that crap it’s counterfeit it’s a proven fact, buy directly from the maker or a reputable health food store ( just my two cents)

Just a few tweaks. Mayo does recommend a plant-forward diet, but not necessarily a vegan one. They recommend avoiding ultraprocessed foods (like hot dogs), and do give preference to plant proteins, but also include chicken and fish in their recommendations, and mention eating a cheese stick with bread at one point (there's no blanket recommendation either for eating or avoiding dairy).

Plant based food is not food that has some "plant powder" mixed with oils, dairy, sugar and bunch of emulsifiers. 🙁

In some parts of the world, including the EU, companies aren't even allowed to call something like a Hershey bar "chocolate". 😉

A farmer told me that the US Dept of Ag allows you to say ‘organic’ on the label even though the product has been sprayed with numerous pesticides and fungicides…thank you, Monsanto!!
The ‘real’ organic farm near me sells veggies whose leaves have holes from nibbling insects, brown spots from damp rot and other less than appealing traits. You just know they’re the real deal but cosmetics are so important in our society…a real conundrum.

Good morning. FYI, I’ll be 73 next month. About 2 years ago I was on a Prostate cancer podcast with prostate cancer experts. There was a female prostate cancer nutrition expert who mentioned that dairy products should be avoided. She mentioned eating a lot of plant based products, including plant based milk. She also specifically said to drink RIPPLE Milk. I’ve been drinking it ever since. It’s a little bit more expensive but does taste good. I’ve also cut out most dairy and processed sugars and increased my consumption of fruits and vegetables. I just had my 5th PSA blood test since my RP in November of 2023 and it is still < 0.01🤞🙏. I echo what another poster said that if you feel its working don’t fix. BTW, I’ve also lost 8 pounds that I attribute to my diet changes. I a not even close to being over weight. Best of luck in your decisions!

I have been drinking lactose-free milk the last two weeks. It seems okey for me, but I will see how it goes in the next few weeks or months.

I find unsweetened coconut milk the closest thing to skim or 2% milk. I drank milk all of my life and converted to coconut milk with ease.

May I ask what are you trying to achieve drinking lactose free milk : ) ? If you are avoiding just sugar for dietary reasons (insulin resistance) , than it could be a good choice.
If you are concerned about PC than perhaps plant based milk could be more beneficial ( like soy milk, almond milk , oat milk etc., but make sure it does not have added sugar, oils or emulsifiers ).
