Ablation for Afib

Posted by mec151 @mec151, 3 days ago

I’m looking for shared experiences with folks who have had only one or two AFib occurrences over six months. I am in that situation right now where I had two AFib episodes in November 24 and am being encouraged to have an ablation. Currently, I am not on any meds. But, if I should have an episode I have a med protocol of metoprolol and eliquis. I monitor 24/7 with an Apple Watch and an Oura. Any advice on how to reduce the chance of recurrence? I’m not thrilled about the ablation.

Interesting you had two episodes in November and none since. Did anything unique happen that month?

My ongoing afib issues started with a cancer med I’ve been on for 4 years. Afib started on my 5th day of that med. I’ve been order to identify personal triggers because I’ve had a LOT of episodes. Episode triggers for me are intense exercise, caffeine, chocolate and foods with tyramine especially aged cheeses or soy sauce that are both in a lot of foods. I’ve eliminated all those yet I’m still having issues. I believe my remaining triggers are untreated sleep apnea and lack of sleep due to insomnia.

I hope that’s helpful. Like you, I’m not thrilled with the idea of ablation.

Thank you for your support and feedback. In the month of November I had a dental infection and a 3 week course of antibiotics. It had been decades ago that I was on amoxicillin. I think the combination triggered my AFib.

At least to my knowledge I have had 1 AFIB episode. I believe I brought it on by doing lots of heavy and hard work repairing one of my ranch gates. I am on Eliquis and metoprolol and had a cardioversion a little over 2 months ago and am in NSR. On the 23rd of May (next week) I will have a Pulsed Field Ablation done at University of Colorado Medical Center. I have no qualms about having the PFA done and am looking forward to getting off of the meds.

Amu45sin here.
Ablation is not dependent only on the number of epsodes. What does heart rate show, blood pressure monitor show, EKG show, blood work show, etc, etc???
It's the total picture.

Hopefully the dental infection and meds were the trigger and you won’t see afib again. My mother only ever had one episode and it was in her 70s after a colonoscopy. They believed the conscious sedation meds triggered it.

There are different kinds of Afib. I have paroxysmal afib and have had several bouts over the last 15 years. I’ve never had an ablation. Since stroke is the biggest concern with afib, I have a Watchman device which is supposed to keep a stroke from happening. I don’t have to take blood thinners because of the Watchman. Good luck!

I got afib after covid. I only had 3 episodes in the first 6 months, then it increased to once a week, then to once every 3 weeks after I figured out moderate exercise was a trigger. I do vagal nerve stim every night now too . I got ablated 10 days ago. I suggest you get a Kardia too, just wearing my watch only catches half of my episodes, and the watch’s ecg is handy but not as good as Kardia. I got a wellue ecg too, that thing is great. I did metoprolol then 60 min later flecainide when I got afib. I said “did”because I’m hopeful I won’t have any more afib! It took a solid 8 days to recover after the ablation, my groin was very mad at me.

My husband has been on Keytruda for almost 1 year and Afibs started a couple of months ago. He just had ablations which eliminated fatigue and lack of appetite. We have requested that Onc & EP drs discuss ongoing treatment(s).

Did you continue cancer med? If so, affect on Afib?
