Cold shower for A-Fib?

Posted by bustedthumb66 @bustedthumb66, 5 days ago

Had a high pulse A-Fib a few years ago for a day and a haft and after a couple years stopped taking my meds. Saturday had a mild relapse and made appointment with cardiology today. Taking a shower to get ready a thought came to me to use very cold water where it kinda takes your breath away and boom , normal pulse again. Guess I'll stay on meds this time. Wish I had thought of cold water Saturday!

@jc76 thanks for your post, helpful information. Funny I’ve been working the last 6+ months on our landscape. At times it has been very strenuous. It felt good, I was tired, was sleeping better. Then all a sudden one night in early April my afib returned after maze surgery 14.5 years ago and not having any issues between operation and April. It certainly has my head spinning as to what the heck is going on? Did I overload my electrical system?

Grew up on large farm in Ca. I'm thinking of growing flowers bees like in backyard. Could be a start for a hobby and help out the bees at same time.

As you know not a cardiologist but when you mention very strenuous on you that might have been the trigger?

Maybe talked to or send a message if you have a portal to your cardilogist or if you have one your EP. Not knowing your health history and even if did not a medical professional over doing it is not good for cardiovascular system if you have medical issues especially cardiovascular.

I am allowed to do Sprint Triathlons even though I have heart failure and have a ICD/Pacemaker. But I had to promise would do a moderate level and not maxium effort at any time. So I am slow and back of pack but really enjoy doing them. When people see my age on back of my leg I hear "oh what an inspiration, I hope I am out here at your age still racing."

Interesting I.D. Do you have a busted thumb?

When you see your cardiologist can you bring up your cold water success with him/her and let us know what he says? It sounds like you may have done sharp breathing in our or gasping and could have acted on your AFIB.

Why did you come off your meds? Did your cardilogist know you came off?

I do not many times cardilogist have suggested non medical ways to try and get your heart back in rympthm. I don't remember them but something like coughing hard, does squad, val salva, etc. I really don't want to infer thse are what they said try just referring to something like that I read or was told.

The cold shower if succesful and cardiologist says okay to try sounds good. It even sounds good to use and quite frankly refreshing as I sit here in hot Florida.

A large glass of ice water as well as running cold water on the inside of the wrists is my “go-to” when no time for cold shower. Shock the vagus nerve any way you can to tame the afib. Adding the metoprolol tartrate is the last resort if afib will not stop on its own or with ice water treatment. This in addition to low doses of metoprolol succinate(pm), Flecanide(am+pm) and eliquis(am+pm) - going to exercise now!

Oh I’m always doing things I’m sure are not good for me. But things have to get done and I can’t afford to properly pay someone to do it and do it right. My early years were growing up on a farm in the Midwest. There are no holidays or vacations for most small farmers you just have to get things done. This has kind of stuck with me over the years.

I had Paroxsysmol, I think thats the spelling,( ocassional) A-Fib that worsened in my 50’s to the point where I need to do something. I had an Ablation about 3.5 years ago and have not had it since.. thank You God. What I found helped halt mine many times was a very HOT shower.

Wow, hot shower worked for you, good deal. Did you try it on your own or did someone tell you about it? I am so hot natured I would probably have a heart attack in a hot shower, lol. JK. I can't stand a hot house in winter. Sometimes I'll visit somebody and they have the heat turned up and I have to leave ASAP! Funny thing is I work outdoors and the Texas heat along the coast is something that takes getting use too but I can tolerate it just fine as long as we have plenty water and breaks every so often. I am curious how often did you have episodes of A-Fib? I myself had one that scared me pretty much four or five years ago and the one I just had two weekends ago which was very mild and an uncomfortable rating of 1 at the most. I thought about the cold shower on my own, I figured it was worth a try and worked just fine.

I was in my late 50’s at the time and was having an episode after having one in my late 20’s. I went to the ER with , what I found out was A-Fib, and they kicked me out once I got below 100BPM. Tols me to follow up with a Cardiologist and prescribed some Eliquis.. The ER Physician informed me that once you get below that threshold, even while still doing the “Heart Hula” there is little chance to throw a clot. We live in the boonies and the Hospital actually has motel rooms available for some patients as it was about 3AM.. They offered and we bit. Still in A-Fib I tried to fall sleep but the Anxiety wouldn’t let me so I decided to try and shower to help. Got under the hot water, very hot actually, and in about 2-3 minutes felt much better and not as anxious or short of breath. Viola I had converted. I used this method for years, as I started having episodes every so often and more as time went on. Id say about 75% success rate. Told my Cardiologist and he just scratched his head. I believe it stimulates the Vagus nerve somehow and trips the switch. Ive had no issues with A-Fib the last 3.5ish years after undergoing an Ablation but lately have been having issues with more PVC’s which I know are benign but really bug me anyways.. As far as frequency I had, like I mentioned, 1 in my late 20’s, then the one above, then as time went on I had had a couple per year for few years then about 62ish stated having them about 4 times a year and the year of my Ablation maybe 5 0r 6. I did always convert on my own and never had to be shocked. They would last anywhere from 10 minutes to 10 hours. Luckily I went to the ER most times so I had a medical record of them. Much easier to get a Cardiologist to do the Ablation with proof!!! Also about cold shower I have a friend whose an Paramedic and he says they are taught the same. Another method that I have heard of is a Valsalvo, I think thats they way its spelled, Maneuver where you sit on the toilet and bear down like your gonna crap real hard for about 20-30 seconds. It stimulates the Vagus nerve that goes from your Heart along your digestive track to your rectum. Ive tried this, though, with no success. God Bless!
