Skin changes with prednisone

Posted by shesnuts @shesnuts, Oct 18, 2022

I had always had great skin, but on 60 g of prednisone. I am experiencing a lot of sagging and thinning of my skin, particularly in my upper arms. I also have extreme bruising whenever anything, touches my forearm or my legs. I also have a lot of capillaries breaking in my legs and face now will this change when I get off of prednisone or lower my dose ? I am still not pain-free. Every step reminds me that I have this disease.

I also have bleeding under ski. If I bump myself. Had it a little before prednisone, skin Doc said it was from sun damage. Now worse on prednisone. Have started using Dermend moisturizing bruise formula with good results.

I have had a terrible time with my skin too. Especially my forearms and tops of my hands. I have been using Aquafor to keep skin moisturized. Works better than any lotion or cream I’ve found.
When it gets a little cooler you can order “sleeves” for extra protection. They come in lots of colors and sizes. Just search online for “thin skin protection “.

Thanks for sharing about the thin skin protection. I had not heard of this. My poor husband has been on Prednisone for PMR and GCA for over a year. He started on 30 mg for PMR, went down to 12.5 when he developed GCA, went on 80 mg as well as three 1200 mg infusions and is now finally back down to 12.5. This has wreaked havoc on his skin on his arms and hands, mostly. I notice skin sagging on his upper arms and so much bruising and easy bleeding. Now he's getting red little spots and rashes which he's never had.

Twice! I got down to 31/2 mg of Prednisone and then had a flare. SO disappointing. I have had PMR for a year. Starting on 20mg.
Now my rheumatologist has prescribed an additional medication. Arava. 10mg going up to 20mg in a couple of weeks. Anyone have this additional med? I was to have Methotrexate, but he decided against that. No-one understands really, as we all look okay, but inside our bodies are in rebellion!
And my gosh! I bumped my leg lightly on the bed leg just now, and there is this large dark blood like blister! My skin is paper thin. Good to read about what other people are doing to help that. PMR is a beast! I got it from someone pushing me, accidentally, off my computer chair. Fell straight down, flat on my butt. 2 weeks later I felt totally disabled. And in pain. Shocking. Now, as we all do, I live trying to stay positive. But it's hard. First time here. So hello everyone!

Anyone, have Arava with Prednisone?

Yes, I’ve noticed I bleed very easily if something scratches my arm like a branch or the dogs claws. The never happened before prednisone. I started at 20mg and now down to 2mg, with help from Kevzara. I’m wondering if my thin skin will stay that way or return back to how it was once off prednisone.

I’ve noticed it for quite a while and I’m on 5mg pred and Actemra infusion. My Rheumatologist shrugs his shoulders as if it’s all part of the process.

@anirose You are SO right we look okay so not sure doctors, etc take us seriously. They can’t believe what we are going through internally.

sometimes I look like I got into a cat fight and lost. my skin tears so easily. band aids and super glue are always nearby.

I'm a Brit living in Toronto. I wish we could all meet and give each other a big hug! It's just a beast to go through. And the medication side effects are brutal too. Apart from the physical pain, I find I'm on a roller coaster, emotionally. And as I have kids and grandchildren, I always do my best to be 'chipper' when I see them. Or they all worry. A quote for us all 🙂

I know, it's just awful. You're joking about super glue, right?! I bumped myself so gently and there is this ghastly purple blood mark! I think we should come up with a bubble wrap suit to wear!
