Cardiac MRI today with general??

Posted by hopenr @hopenr, 2 days ago

The plot thickens (like the heart muscle);-). I once had an allergic reaction to the contrast dye so I have been pre-medicating with prednisone and Benadryl. I am claustrophobic and anxious so they are going to use a general anesthesia which I am going to push back on. I prefer the cool stuff they use for colonoscopies but they say I am going to be in the tube for 60-90 minutes!! 18 hour fast- ugh! Please share any experience you have MRI sedation. Thank you!

Hi @hopenr, what a stressful situation!
I remember the cardiac MRI very well...it lasted a long, long, long time!
I don't think anybody really cares to go inside a long enclosed tube that makes loud noises with an IV in their arm, so you are not alone.
I did not like having to be strapped down either while going through this, but you have to do things you don't want to sometimes to get the answers that will help with your health care plan.
Being sedated may be the choice for those who have extreme claustrophobia, and I get it. Like I said, I don't think anyone likes the thought of going in that long machine.
I had to use my most powerful thought calming powers! I prayed. I used the time inside to try and think about what I was going to have for dinner. What would it look like to move furniture in my living room. The price of gas. Visualized walking my hiking trail...anything to distract my fear.
Fear is powerful, but so are your thoughts.
So while I did not have sedation, you will be in the care of trained professionals who do this everyday. Trust and have faith.
It will be over and you will gain information that is going to help you. You can do this! It's not fun, but it doesn't hurt and time eventually goes by and they tell you "you're all done now!"

That is really helpful. They just called and said the MRI tech has a hot water heater problem so I am getting the 3rd best guy. This is getting comical and not instilling confidence.

I'm sorry for your claustrophobia. For some reason I don't have it in MRI tubes, but I understand it. Why are you pushing away from general anesthesia? Is it more dangerous to have that with HOCM and/or with Camzyos?

Pushing back from anesthesia cause I am a control freak and it scares me. And yeah- they needed to flood my body with water before the anesthesia cause it slows the heart down so it is concerning for HoCM. But I did it- two hours in the tube so I actually know now that I could not have made it without it. Once we get the results I will schedule the septal myectomy.
