I, too, am one who cannot take antihistamines for sleep. I get hyped up instead of sleepy. The only thing I have found that helps me now that I had to taper off Klonopin is a CBD/THC gummy and it does not always help. Yet my neighbor finds good relief with Unisom and says the gummy does nothing. We are all different, yes!
How are you doing? I get to sleep, but wake up after a couple of hours. A very small dose of Klonopin helps me get 7-8 uninterrupted hours, but that’s not a good longterm solution, right? I need something to help me get my internal clock reset. THC not legal here or I would be doing that.
Hi Everyone,
It has now been three months since I had COVID. One of the most troubling symptoms is chronic insomnia. After a mild case of Covid that I thought was gone after seven days, on the eighth day I could not fall asleep without medication.
The way I describe the reason for my insomnia is as soon I am ready to fall asleep, my jaw drops back and airway opens I get an involuntary body shake with my lowers legs getting tingly and extremities, toes and ears feeling flush. This jerks my awake and it’s hard to get back to sleep. To sleep fitfully, I have used Ambien and Besroma, but I do not like their side effects and they aren’t very effective for long term sleep. Recently I use Benadryl or Unisom and I do get some sleep, but not consistent.
I do have a sleep apnea tests coming up this week. Perhaps that’s part of the puzzle. I have been following the medical protocol to get to the bottom of this. My primary doctor is very good but not a specialist in COVID. Next step perhaps a Neurologist?
In a nutshell, this is the one symptom, insomnia, that I would love to hear back from people on. What have you done to get on a path of recovery versus toughing it out and hoping it resolves itself with time? In addition are there any doctors and facilities that specialize in long haul Covid symptoms, specifically around sleep and the nervous system? Thank you!

Thank you for the note. I am anxiously awaiting a CPAP machine. I did the sleep study and I do have sleep apnea. Hopefully the equipment will be available soon. I really appreciate your note about persistency. I’m always working on being patient keeping in mind being a persistent advocate for myself. Getting the sleep test done and getting a CPAP are a good step in the right direction. I’ll keep you posted on my next steps and how it’s going with the CPAP once I receive it. Happy healing to you, as well.🙏
