Have you had experience w/ costochondritis?
HI, I had an episode in the middle of the night that caused severe pain in my mid back and sternum, it seemed to radiate around my ribs and my pain was at a 7 or 8. It lasted 2 1/2 hours with the pain, eventually subsiding to aches and some burning sensations in my mid back and shoulder blades. I do not feel it was cardiovascular. Online it mentions that it could have been costochondritis and I am wondering if anyone has experienced this and what do you do to help? Thank you!

@michelle1075 I am not trying to be an alarmist, but I think you should contact your primary caregiver's nurse line or triage line now and describe your symptoms.
Costochondritis typically affects the sternum, and sometimes the shoulder and arm, but does not necessarily radiate all the way around. It is an inflammation, so if your press where your sternum and ribs join, you should be able to feel sore spots - much like pressing on a recently bruised joint.

Depending on your other health conditions, this could be an indication of a heart attack, and should not be ignored. There is a simple blood test that can be performed to rule it out. After that, if it happens again, you can explore further to find the cause.

How are you feeling today?
Ive had costochronditis in the past, normally on the left side of my chest (which caused freak out mode to kick in), but lately, last night coincidently, it enveloped my whole chest and back. Mine was very uncomfortable but it wasnt a sharp pain as you experienced, more of the burning sensation. Ive had heart monitor and heart ultrasound to rule out anything and my heart is healthy.
What I do, and what I’ve done, is try to stretch a bit, massage it if I can, put on a heating pad, and take Tylenol. I take extra magnesium glycinate but whether it helps specifically I don’t know. It does keep the leg cramps away.
I contribute EVERYTHING to fibromyalgia but I usually have it checked out if I find it worry some.
@michelle1075 I have had the same experience twice. Both times went to ER via ambulance. Had cardiac work ups but nothing showed and eventually was sent home with instructions to get a full cardiac work -up. Twice I had every cardiac test. A cardiologist told me to suck on mints—it helped. My heart is in good condition; no evidence of a cardiac event! Now, I’m of the opinion that it probably is costochondritis. But, that’s after 2 full work-ups that were negative.
I would totally agree with @sueinmn . Please get a referral to cardiology! Let the doctors decide! You can ask them if it could be costochondritis based on the inflammatory situation in your body,
Better safe than sorry!!
I’ve had this happen maybe about 6 times in my 10 years. I had to research the symptoms too because it was so bizarre.
Thanks for mentioning that the cardiologist recommended mints. I was going to say it would be good if they were covered in chocolate LOL. However, that led me to look it up and I found an article that lists foods that can contribute to Costochondritis as well as foods that may help relieve it. I was very surprised to read that it is common amongst people with fibromyalgia. Sometimes it feels as though I know nothing about Fibromyalgia or that I’ve researched and searched out everything to make it better. It can be exhausting and sometimes feels impossible but never stop educating yourself because you don’t know what bits of info can change your life.
@michelle1075 How are you doing? Did the pain subside?
Thank you - I have made the presumption these days that it is just another fibro thing and chalk it up to that. Maybe I shouldn't but I don't want to go to another doctor's visit because something new popped up.
It has for the most part, I am still uncomfortable with my bra pressing on my rib cage. If it gets bad again, I will made a doctor's appointment - or go to ER to be sure it is nothing but a fibro related.
thank you, Sue. it is sore and bras aren't making me very comfortable right now. If I have the severity of it again, I will go to the ER, or see my doctor.
I’m glad to hear it’s subsided, and if it gets bad again you’ll get medical assistance. Sometimes its just enough confirmation of what it isn’t for us to know what it is. THE BRA…torture contraption. LOL. Yes, I experience that.
