How are you coping if you have long term brain fog from covid?

Posted by dh524 @dh524, May 30, 2024

Brain fog has been persistent since I got Covid a year ago. I have to read everything 3 or 4 times and then forget what I read like for example instructions. Is anyone else dealing with this?

@dh524 - Absolutely! It is so bad that I have abandoned reading instructions that are more than 3 steps and/or point and click. I was having an unusually bad day on the Corona Coaster - unable to name objects , etc. during my "LC" plumonary rehab appt. last week. I tried to explain the brain fog to the pulmonology physical therapist but she still looked puzzled after my attempt. You hit the nail on the head with your explanation! I am going to use that one.

Yup, 3 seems to be my magic number. 3 numbers, 3 paragraphs, 3 steps to a project - unless it is written down and I can refer back to it as necessary. Usually after each step once, maybe more, I get deeper in…

The LC Demon loves me. Eye issues here. I have it on my LC Symptom Tracker as "LC Eyes". Not so much sensitivity to light, but blurred vision. It happens intermittently but usually later in the day. Everything becomes blurry. I find it's exacerbated by stress. It started happening while I was hospitalized for Covid and recovering so I know this is directly related to the Covid Monster and his cousin the LC Demon.

Lasik in 2005 - no corrective lenses near 20/20.
Near sight brought need for OTC readers, eventually Rx readers.
Next single vision for far sight for driving only, specifically at night.
It was a challenge to see.
Enter COVID-LC: Total change in vision - new Rx readers worn all day; far sight became horrible at every distance. Got double vision (for far sight with bifocals, mainly for driving so I can see the road and the dash. Need a new pair to wear for inside distance and bifocals. I have 3 pairs of glasses on my person at all times. When I awake during the night I cannot read the fairly large digital number time on my watch even when “nose to nose”. At times I feel like my eyes are working independently of each other and it takes several blinks and looking from side to side a couple times before they focus. Like everything else, when tested in that moment, my prescription remains basically the same. It is a continuous struggled to see… If it’s been said before, it’s been said over and over here - I believe you. You are not alone.

I know what you mean. My eyes cannot re-focus. If I have been trying to read (very difficult) then switch to watching TV, it will take 15-20 minutes for the blurry, double vision to clear a bit.

I do pretty well with contact lenses, but my eyes have gotten so dry that I can only wear them for short periods of time.

My optometrist has me on steroid drops now, and the pain is better. Vision is still pretty bad.
I am still firmly in the grip of LC (three years). I wonder if I will ever recover, or even improve?!

I have had eye concerns and I have been taking vitamins E, A, lutein and zeaxanthin with olive oil because they are fat soluble. I also take omega 3 fish oil and vitamin C. I have blurry vision when I get up in the morning, but okay after that.

Here is a reference for you to consider:
"Addressing blurry vision through supplements can be a proactive and supportive measure for maintaining eye health. Key nutrients such as vitamins A, C, and E and minerals like zinc play vital roles. Incorporating lutein, zeaxanthin, and omega-3 fatty acids further enhances the protective effects."

I don’t mean to complain but I was an author of 10 books and that long covid gave me brain fog so bad I couldn’t remember what I ate for lunch the day before my writing skill went down such a drastic level, it’s just not fair I can’t even write 4 years after this started, it’s so incredibly much harder.

Due you think it could be a combo of writers block plus fog?

So sorry to hear that. Not a writer but was dealing with the brain fog symptoms for a while. Came and went for me. Good luck.

So sorry! I can relate, only my difficulty is reading. In 2023, I read 75 books. Then I got Covid (for the fourth time!), and I don't think I've read a whole book since. Ugh.

Hi,
That is awful about your brain fog! Plus after you wrote 10 books! I admire you for that. My husband had lung cancer. At one point they gave him the wrong medicine when he got a CT scan. It gave him brain fog. I did some research and discovered that drinking a lot of water and also drinking Gatorade would help alleviate the brain fog. It did help him a lot. The brain fog finally went away. You also might make certain that you are getting enough vitamins and nutrients; especially iron. The Covid probably took a lot of that out of your body and it needs to be replaced.

Talk to God about your problem. He's always there for us. He made you and he can fix you. I'll say a prayer for you also.
Happy Easter!

Hi @johnnyboy. So sorry this has happened to you and not making light of it in any way as so many lives decimated by this.
It sounds so simple but a common recovery strategy is slow and steady relearning for our bodies without pushing our limits too far which create setbacks of any kind. Reading, writing, typing take energy and maybe track how you are feeling after 5 min vs 15min? I go further with talking on phone while writing or typing brings on excruciating symptoms🙃. Hope this helps you find your comfortable baseline to slowly build up tolerated time and enjoy that amazing creative spirit! Quickest healing to you🌈
